David A. Lips

David A. Lips, 30, of 24801 Kern Road, died at 8:40 a.m. Monday in the burn unit at St. Joseph's hospital, Fort Wayne, of burns suffered Sept. 30 in an electrical accident southwest of South Bend. Lips, a lineman for Indiana & Michigan Electric Co., suffered burns over 80 percent of his body while working on a power line in the 82000 block of Locust Road. Lips was working above the ground in a high-ranger bucket truck when the accident occurred, according to county police. Lips and another worker on the ground reportedly were repairing a power line at the time. Lips was taken to Memorial Hospital after the accident and was transferred a short while later to the Fort Wayne hospital. Lips was born June 28, 1955, in South Bend, and was a lifelong area resident.

On June 9, 1979, in South Bend, he married Diana L. KapIon, who survives. Also surviving are a daughter, Angela at home; a son, Jason at. home; a sister, Vicki Kulwicki of South Bend; two brothers, John and Paul, both of South Bend; his parents, Lorraine and Joseph Lips of South Bend; and maternal grandparents, Carrie and Casimer Wawrzyniak of South Bend.

Services will be at 11 a.m. Thursday in St. Joseph Funeral Home. Burial will be at St. Joseph Cemetery. Friends may call from 2 to 4 and 6 to 9 p.m. Wednesday in the funeral home, where the rosary will be said at 6:30 p.m. Wednesday. He was a member of Chain-O-Lakes Conservation Club and Volksring Club. Memorial contributions may be made to David A. Lips Memorial Fund Burn Unit, in care of the St. Joseph Bank & Trust Co.
