BENEDICT J. SOBECKI

March 15, 1930 - Nov. 25, 2010
SOUTH BEND - Ben Sobecki, 80, with his wife by his side, left this world on November 25, 2010. He was born in South Bend on March 15th, 1930, to the late Valentine "Bill" and Martha (Molenda) Sobecki. He now rests with his siblings John, Eddie, Gertrude Harlozinski and Clara Radziwil, and is survived by sisters, Ann Bryant (Mentone, IN), Loretta Maure (South Bend, IN), Emily Williams (Stringer, MS); sister-in-law, Gerry Sobecki (Mishawaka); and many nieces and nephews.

Ben and his family grew up on the west side of South Bend where he spent his childhood running around playing sports with his brothers and working at the family grocery store.

Ben graduated from Washington High School and began his adult life by marrying his true love, Valentine "Val" Trzybinski, on March 26th, 1951, in St. Hedwig's Catholic Church.

As a professional, Ben worked at Singer's Co. and Studebaker before joining the family business with his uncles, John Molenda and Sal Langner at Sal Langner's Grocery on the west side of South Bend. Ben worked there for several years before buying the business with his brother, Eddie. After selling the store in 1978, he worked for the SBCSC at Clay prior to finally retiring from Riley High School in 1995. He then worked part-time for St. Joseph County. Ben worked to pay the bills, but everyone who knew him knows that his family was his passion.

Ben is survived by his wife, Val; seven children, Kathleen Sobecki, Leonard Sobecki, Rita (Mike) Glenn, Diane (Dave) Wood, Terri (Randy) Glenn, Janine (Rodney) Dudzinski and Michele (Andy) Relias, all of South Bend; 16 grandchildren, Jason (Mackenzie) Glenn, Joshua (Melissa) Glenn, Matthew (DeeDee) Wood, Sarah (Scott) Quinn, Ashley Wood, Christopher (Alison) Glenn, Jeremy Glenn, Tony (Heather) Glenn, Amanda, Nicole and Brooke Dudzinski, Tyler and Lauren Avery, Caitlin, Blaise and Morgan Relias; and 14 great-grandchildren, Macy, Kennedy, Brody, Reese and Campbell Glenn, Taylour, Adison, Kylah and Avery Wood, Konner and Karson Quinn, John, Mary and Daniel Glenn.

Ben was a devout Catholic and a member of Holy Family Parish, St. Joe Young Men's and Legion of Mary, all of South Bend. Ben spent his life supporting and serving his faith, family, friends and community, always with a smile and handshake or hug.

Viewing will be held in St. Joseph's Funeral Home, 824 South Mayflower Road, South Bend, today, November 28th, from 2:00 p.m. till 8:00 p.m. Mass of Christian Burial will be held in Holy Family Catholic Church, 56405 Mayflower Road, South Bend, on Monday, November 29th, at 1:00 p.m., with burial to follow at St. Joseph's Cemetery. The family asks, if you wish to make a donation, please do so in Ben's name to Holy Family Catholic Church. Ben's family would like to express their heartfelt thanks and appreciation for the wonderful care and compassion of the late Dr. Jaun Garcia, Dr. Bilal Ansari, the staff at Hematology and Oncology, Inc., and the angel nurses at Memorial Hospital, 10th Floor.
