SOUTH BEND - John Edward Lawecki, 83, passed away peacefully on Tuesday, July 10th at the Michiana Health & Rehabilitation Center. He was born in South Bend, Indiana on May 30, 1929 to Boleslaw and Anna (Sasiadek) Lawecki, both of whom preceded him in death. He was a lifelong resident of South Bend.

John was a 1948 graduate of Washington High School, where he was the class salutatorian. He played basketball and baseball for the Panthers.

On June 24, 1950, in South Bend, he was married to Lorraine S. Sielski. John and Lorraine were married for twenty-eight years. On July 3, 1979, in Las Vegas, NV, John was married to Martha N. "Mickie" (McClain) Mulhollan, who survives, along with sons Dan (Linda) of South Bend, Mike of San Pierre, IN and a daughter, Jan (Mike) Bristow of Muncie, IN. Also surviving are grandchildren Jen (Brent) Gregory of Mishawaka, Dan Lawecki of Mishawaka, Ashley (Ian) DeLater of South Bend, Ross (Beverly) Bristow of Noblesville, IN, Austin (Caitlin) Bristow of Zionsville, IN, Andy Lawecki of South Bend, Holly Lawecki of Granger, and Stephanie Bristow of Indianapolis. Also surviving are two great- granddaughters, Alaina and Ella DeLater of South Bend. John is survived by six step children: Dan (Juli) Mulhollan of Alexandria, VA, John (Rosemary) Mulhollan of Las Vegas, NV, Timothy (Margarite) of Reseda, CA, Brian (Julie) of Frankfort, IL, Kelli (Ken) Embree of Lowell, IN and Mary (Larry) Olive of Las Vegas, NV. He is also survived by eleven step grandchildren and ten step great-grandchildren. John is also survived by his sister Jean Pine of La Porte, IN.

His brother Joseph preceded him in death.

John spent his entire thirty-eight year working career with the U.S. Postal Service, beginning as a letter carrier in 1948, and retiring as the South Bend Postmaster in 1986. At the time of his retirement, John was the MSC Manager for forty-three post offices in northern Indiana. He was a member of the National Association of Retired Federal Employees.

He was a former member of the Polish National Alliance (PNA), the Achievement Forum and the Greene Twp. Lions Club. John enjoyed toiling in his vegetable garden and working on construction projects. He later traded in his hammer and saw for a spatula and frying pan, and the numerous meals that he prepared for family and friends left no one disappointed. His city chicken, Polish noodles and green beans were a real treat for all! John participated in an active lifestyle, but always made time for family and friends. He was a wonderful Dad to his children, and a great role model. His tireless work ethic inspired his children. He will be greatly missed by all who were fortunate to have known him.

Visitation will be from 4:00 pm to 8:00 pm Friday, July 13, 2012 and from 12 p.m. to 1:00 p.m. on Saturday, July 14, 2012 in Kaniewski Funeral Home, 3545 North Bendix Drive, South Bend, IN. Funeral Services will be held at 1:00 p.m. Saturday, July 14, 2012 in Kaniewski Funeral Home. Cremation will follow. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Heartland Hospice Memorial Fund, 333 N. Summit St., P.O. Box 10086, Toledo, OH 43699-0086.
