SOUTH BEND - Mr. Alex William Carnell Howard Jr., 81, who resided on East Sorin Street, South Bend, Indiana, passed away at 10:08 p.m. on Sunday March 27, 2011, in Memorial Hospital, South Bend, Indiana. Alex was born on June 26, 1929, in Benton Harbor, Michigan, to the union of Rev. Alex W. and Cassie Ann (Fields) Howard Sr., who both preceded him in death. Coming from Benton Harbor at an early age he moved to South Bend. He was united in holy matrimony to Daisy Helen (Fields) in 1965, who also preceded him in death. He worked over 40 years at Bendix as a supervisor, then he worked 12 years in the mailroom at WNDU. He was a former member of Mt. Olive Missionary Baptist Church. He was a member of the Elks Lodge and the LaSalle Landing Lodge #298 where he formerly served as Exalted Ruler. His hobbies included bowling, fishing, playing cards, and cooking, especially barbecuing.

Alex was preceded in death by his parents, Rev. Alex William and Cassie Ann Howard Sr.; his wife, Daisy Helen Howard; and a sister, Dorothy Grigsby.

Survivors left to cherish his loving memory include one daughter, Winnifred Miller (and her husband, Gerald) Bronner of Indianapolis, Indiana; one stepson, Charles Moore of South Bend; three grandchildren, Regina and Robert Leeks, both of Indianapolis, and Michelle Howard of Decatur, Illinois; a host of great-grandchildren, along with other relatives and friends.

Funeral services for Mr. Alex William Carnell Howard Jr. will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Thursday, March 31, 2011, in Alford's Mortuary, with burial following at Highland Cemetery. Viewing will take place at Alford's from 10:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m. Arrangements have been entrusted to Alford's Mortuary where messages of condolence may be e-mailed to Alforsmortuary@comcast.net, c/o the Howard family.
