Joseph G. Lips

Joseph G Lips, beloved husband, father, grandfather, brother. uncle, cousin, and friend, passed away April 1, 1999, after fighting a courageous battle with cancer and macular degeneration Joe was born on October 24, 1927, to Achiel and Marie (Van Overberghe) Lips, who preceded him in death.
On August 26, 1950, in St. Adalbert Church, he married Lorraine Wawrzyniak, who survives. Joe is also survived by a daughter, Vicki (Jeff) Kulwicki of South Bend: two sons, John (Cheryl) Lips of South Bend and Paul (Margaret) Lips of Indianapolis, Ind.; and a daughter-in-law, Diana (David) Lips of South Bend; four grandchildren, Jason Lips, Mark Kulwicki, Angela Lips and Mellissa Vandergriff; one brother, Robert (Ester) Lips of South Bend; and a sister, Sena (Mike) Ruszkowski of Mishawaka. Joe was preceded in death by a daughter, Connie Jo in 1974: and by a son, David (Diana) in 1985.
Joe was a 1947 graduate of Washington High School, and he retired from the former St. Joseph Bank and Trust Co. (Keybank) in 1990 as maintenance engineer. Joe was a member of Holy Family Parish, Bowlers Country Club, Loyal Order of the Moose Lodge #58, Teachers Credit Union Honor Roll and Chippewa Seniors. Joe was past president of the former Volkskring Club. Joe was an avid fisherman and carpenter. He also enjoyed gar-dening and card playing. Joe touched many lives and was always there for you with a helping hand and sound advice. Joe will be dearly missed.
Friends may call from 3 to 8 p.m. on Sunday at the St. Joseph Funeral Home, 824 S. Mayflower Road, where a Rosary will be said at 4:30 p.m. A Mass of Christian Burial will be offered by Fr. Bernard Galic at 10 a.m. on Monday in Holy Family Catholic Church, and burial will be at St. Joseph Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorial gifts to the Holy Family Catholic Church Building Fund, to Hospice of SI. Joseph County, to the Women's Care Center, or to the St. Vincent DePaul Society.
