Marcel "Marc" C. Geirnaert

Marc C. Geirnaert, 74, of Moss Road, South Bend, Ind., died following a short illness at 6:20 a.m. Wednesday, Oct. 1, in the Saint Joseph Regional Medical Center, South Bend. Mr. Geirnaert was born Oct. 31, 1928, in Romney, Ontario, Canada, to the late Camiel and Bertha (De Matrie) Geirnaert, and had lived in South Bend since the age of one. He was also preceded in death by a daughter, Cynthia Mumaw on Feb. 18, 2002; and by a brother, Cyrille Martens.

On Feb. 11, 1950, in South Bend, he married Joan Kilmer, who survives. He is also survived by a son, Joseph (Pamela) Geirnaert of South Bend; four grandchildren, Tina and Brian Geirnaert, and Jeff (Kristen) and Jon Mumaw; three great-grandchildren, Dominque, Phillip and Elaine Geirnaert; and by his mother-in-law, Ruth Kilmer of South Bend.

 Mr. Geirnaert retired as a mail carrier for the United States Postal Service in 1983 after 35 years service. He was a member of St. John the Baptist Catholic Church, Loyal Order of Moose Lodge #58, National Association of Letter Carriers #330, and Pro Health. He was a 1947 graduate of Washington High School, and kept in touch with a group of five high school friends by meeting for lunch every week. One of the greatest joys in his life was his family and the time he spent with his children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren. His entire family was with him at the time of his death.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday, Oct. 4, in St. John the Baptist Catholic Church, with Rev. Lourdino Fernandez officiating. Burial will follow at St. Joseph Cemetery South Bend. Friends may call from 4 to 8 p.m. today, Oct. 3, in the Welsheimer Funeral Home, 521 N. William St.
