Calvin Bowles, 76, a former resident of South Bend, Ind., quietly passed away In a Louisville, KY, hospital from pneumonia on Monday, November 13, 2006. He was born to Molly and John Henry Bowies Sr. in South Bend on January 31, 1930. He was raised there and graduated from Washington High where he played varsity basketball for the legendary John Wooden. Calvin attended Indiana State University on a boxing scholarship. After the Studebaker plant where he was working closed, he took advantage of a government retraining program to become a computer programmer. That led to jobs with a finance company in South Bend, with Loyola University in Chicago, and finally with a prominent savings and loan in San Diego, CA, from which he retired as a senior systems analyst. 

Calvin and his two brothers provided the financial support for their sister to retire from the workforce and to take care of their parents during their declining years. Most of his own years after retirement were dedicated to providing everything possible for the care and comfort of his older sister, helping other senior citizens by doing handy work for them, and successfully supporting his youngest son's effort to graduate from the University of Miami.

His parents, his oldest sister, Nebraska Thomas, his brothers, John Henry Bowles Jr. and Thomas Harold Bowles, his sisters-in-law, Doris Bowles, Marvella Bowles, Johnnie Bowles and Agnes Bowles, his brothers-in-law, Joseph Thomas and Fred Greer, a nephew, Raymond Bowles, a niece, Devorah Harris, and a son, Kevin Michael Bowles, preceded him in death.

He leaves behind a sister, Erma Greer of South Bend, Ind.; four sons, Calvin Bowles Jr. of Pittsburg, CA, Daryl Bowles of Louisville, KY, Robert Heard of South Bend, IN, and Kalin Micha Bowles of Miami, FL; a daughter, Kelle Yvette Richardson of Dallas, TX; grandchildren, Calvin Bowles III, Channel Bowles, Sherie Bowles, DeShay Young, Quincy Heard, Raquel Heard, Le'Kealon Harbor, Shane Richardson and Marva Rae Richardson; and great-grandchildren, Darren Bowles, Shanae Bowles, Christopher Bowles, Jourdan Bowles, Anthony Young, Amya Young, Aubrey Young and Kayla Harbor. Also nieces and nephews, Jo Alice Thomas, Annette Thomas, William Thomas, Daisy Bowles, Jan Bowles, John Henry Bowles III, David Bowles, Kevin Bowles, Sandra Bibbs, Audrey Bibbs, Barry Bibbs, Paulette Bibbs, Thomas Harold Bowles Jr., Dennis Bowles and Shelly Baldwin; and a host of great-nieces and nephews.

Visitation for Mr. Calvin Bowles will be Friday, November 17, 2006, In Pentecostal Cathedral Church of God In Christ from 6 to 8 p.m. Funeral services will be held at 4 p.m. Saturday, November 18, 2006, in Alford's Mortuary, with burial on Monday, November 20, 2006. Arrangements have been entrusted to Alford's Mortuary.
