SOUTH BEND — Joseph Anderson Sanders, 71, former Chamber of Commerce executive and community leader, died Friday at Memorial Hospital. Starting in 1968, Mr. Sanders spent 16 years as a staff executive with the South Bend-Mishawaka Area Chamber of Commerce. He served as director for of the Human Development Division, was the director of the Industrial Council and served as marketing manager for the Private Industries Council for the Chamber. Mr. Sanders served as a director of the NAACP, president and treasurer of ACTION Inc., a member of the South Bend Branch of the Urban League, an officer of Big Brothers of St. Joseph County and president of the LaSalle Park Neighborhood Council.

From 1970 through 1981, Mr. Sanders was metropolitan director of the National Alliance of Business. covering 12 north central Indiana counties. In addition to his other activities, he served on Ole boards of directors of Hansel Center, Valley American Bank and Housing Development Committee and was a vice president of the Civic Center Foundation board, a director of Memorial Hospital and a member of the South Bend Rotary Club and Greater St. John Missionary Baptist Church. In 1984. Sanders left his post at the Chamber to head SANCO, a wholesale distribution business.

He was born July 23, 1923, in Macon, Ga. On Dec. 31, 1945, in South Bend, he married Henrietta Gulley. She survives with four daughters, Constance Sanders and Cordelia McNamee, both of South Bend, Judy Williams of Niles and Brenda Douglas of Chicago; two sons, John of South Bend and Ronald of Richmond, Ind.; 12 grandchildren; eight great-grand-children; three sisters, Evelyn Baugh of South Bend, Mildred Currie of Gary and Agnes Stevens of Chicago; and a brother, John of South Bend.

He was an World War II Army veteran.

Services will be at 1 p.m. Wednesday in Greater St. John Missionary Baptist Church. Burial will be in Riverview Cemetery. Friends may call after 11 a.m. Wednesday in the church. Clark Funeral Chapel is in charge of arrangements.
