SOUTH BEND - Jane Sue Grochowski, 70, of the Holy Cross Care and Rehabilitation Center, passed away at 2:15 a.m. Tuesday, February 19, 2008, in Saint Joseph Regional Medical Center after an extended smoking-related illness. Jane was born on January 20, 1938, in Weis Drenst, Poland, to Chester Grochowski and Harriett (Lacinska) Grochowski. She moved to South Bend in 1946.

Jane had been employed in the mortgage department of the First Bank of Mishawaka in the mid-1970s.

On August 10, 1957, she married Stephen J. Nyers III, who survives. Also surviving are three sons, Stephen J. (Stephanie) Nyers IV of South Bend, IN, Anthony M. (Lisa) Nyers of Granger, IN, and Christopher A. (Tammy) Nyers of Bradenton, FL. Jane was adored by her four grandchildren, Kaylee (Steve and Stephanie); and Nicole, Mitchell, and Cecilia (Lisa and Tony); and her brother, George (Dorothy) Grochowski of South Bend, IN.

She was preceded in death by her brother, Slawain (Slake) Grochowski.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10:30 a.m. Friday, Feb. 22, in St. Pius X Church. Burial will follow at St. Joseph Cemetery immediately afterwards. Friends may call from 2 to 8 p.m. Thursday in the Kaniewski Funeral Home, 3545 N. Bendix Drive, where a Rosary will be prayed at 7:30 p.m. Friends may also call for one hour prior to the Mass on Friday in St. Pius X Church.

Jane attended St. Adalbert Grade School. She was a 1956 graduate of Washington High School and received her bachelor of arts degree from Indiana University at South Bend in 1996.
