PEARL M. (CARTER) WESSON

Mrs. Pearl Maxine Wesson departed this life on Saturday, April 22, 2023, in South Bend, Indiana. Maxine was born on December 19, 1938, in Caruthersville, Missouri to Newton Carter and Alberta Edwards.
Pearl, affectionately known as "Maxine" graduated from Washington High School in South Bend and attended Indiana University in Bloomington, Indiana.

Maxine worked for several years at the former Indiana Bell. She continued her education earning a certificate as a sign language interpreter. She worked for over 20 years in the South Bend Community School Corporation as a sign language interpreter. Working with special needs children brought her much joy. Maxine loved to dance, travel, and work cross word puzzles. She was one of the original members of the Chippewa Bowl Ambassador Club and the Rollettes: the first Black Women's bowling league. She held many offices within the organization. She was also installed as a member of the Saint Joe Valley USBC in 2009. Maxine was a lifelong member of the Greater St. John Missionary Baptist Church, South Bend where she attended faithfully until her illness.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Leon Wesson, her parents Newton C. Carter and Alberta Carter Johnson; stepmother Catherine Carter; her son Alex J. Wesson, Sr.; a brother, James Carter Sr. and two sisters, Josephine, and Barbara Lindsey.

Maxine leaves to cherish her memory two children, Thomas (Cathy) Williams of Indianapolis, Indiana and Paula Wesson of Seattle, Washington; grandchildren Alicia Wesson (Duane White), LaWanda (Larry) Parker Jr., Alex Wesson (Maryori), Alexandria (Wilfred) Wesson -Mklindi, Robert Malone, of South Bend; Kelly Williams of Indianapolis, Indiana; Tyler Wolak of Wyatt, Indiana, daughter in law, Denise Wesson; two sisters Albertine Barrett of Lakeland, Florida and Germaine Covington of Atlanta, Georgia; 14 great grandchildren; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.
