Alino Lloyd Kerr - Class Of 1965 VIEW PROFILE

Alino Lloyd Kerr

Lloyd Kerr Sr.,

November 20, 1946 - May 29, 2023

Lloyd Kerr Sr. and his twin brother Floyd Kerr were born in Oxford, Mississippi (Lafayette County), on November 20,1946, to Lonzo and Leolia Kerr. They were just 10 minutes apart. When they were five years-old, their family moved from Mississippi to South Bend, Indiana, where they both grew up. Lloyd delivered the South Bend Tribune newspaper for several years. He was a Boy Scout who loved camping and spent many summers swimming at the South Bend YMCA. He was an elite athlete in both basketball and track and field at South Bend Washington High School, winning the sectional and regional basketball championships. Lloyd topped off his high school track career by taking 3rd place in the 110-meter-high hurdles in the state finals. As a fun fact, he was also a dedicated member of Washington’s ROTC program.

In 1965, Lloyd and Floyd graduated from Washington and were awarded basketball scholarships to Colorado State University (CSU) in Fort Collins, Colorado. His senior year, Lloyd averaged 15.8 points, 13.3 FG-attempts, and 5.7 rebounds at CSU. Lloyd played against many notable basketball legends like Nate Archibald, Mike Warren, and Lou Alcindor, AKA Kareem Abdul-Jabbar. He had one of his highest-scoring games of the season against Kareem at UCLA! Their last year at CSU, the Kerr brothers led the school to the elite eight in the1969 NCAA Tournament. Even today, the 1969 team is still the farthest traveled NCAA tournament team in CSU history. Lloyd and Floyd will forever be remembered as “Legends of the Hardwood” at Colorado State, in recognition of the 1969 team and their achievements.

After graduating from CSU, Lloyd was drafted in the third round of the NBA by the Phoenix Suns, 39th pick overall. Lloyd went on to play professional basketball in Liège, Belgium, for two seasons. He also played with the renowned Marcus Hayes and the Harlem Magicians for one season, playing in legendary arenas like the Boston Garden, Madison Square Garden, and the Los Angeles Forum.

Once he retired from basketball, Lloyd moved to Indiana, then Oregon, before settling down in Bolingbrook, IL, where he resided for the rest of his life. Lloyd continued to play basketball locally for fun at the YMCA for several years. While he pledged at CSU, Lloyd officially became a member of the Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity, Inc.’s Maywood/Wheaton, IL, alumni chapter in the early 1980s, eventually securing a lifetime membership.

Career-wise, Lloyd dedicated his career to the healthcare industry. He started off in pharmaceutical sales before transitioning to a medical technical specialist for Ciba Diagnostics, Bayer, and Siemens, where he spent most of his time. He helped teach healthcare professionals how to operate standard medical tools that helped save people’s lives. Lloyd was honored many times with the President’s Circle Award for his hard work and dedication. However, his passion was serving the community and supporting youth through sports. Lloyd served as a township trustee for the Village of Bolingbrook for several years. He also coached little league baseball and community basketball, where both of his sons played. Beyond that, Lloyd continued to teach all his children in sports and in life.

Lloyd and Maggie met in the summer of 1964. Lloyd’s brother Lonzo is credited with introducing the two high school sweethearts at an ice cream shop in South Bend, both went on to spend the next six decades together. They were married on August 10, 1968, celebrating almost 55 years of marriage and overall, 59 years together.

Lloyd was a voracious reader, enjoyed watching Westerns, loved photography, captured special moments and relaxed with music. Some additional interests included civic engagement, supporting Black-owned businesses, and eating a good candy bar every now and again. He also loved his family dearly and enjoyed spending time with them. The highlight of his year was making plans to attend the Whitfield or Kerr Family Reunions, and of course, he would never miss Calvin and Renee White’s famous annual Fall Fish Fry!

Lloyd’s three children, Lloyd Jr. (1971), Schin (1979), and Chloé (1985), were his motivation. His twin brother Floyd was his soulmate, and his wife Maggie was his heart. Yet, late in life, the joy and warmth that shone so bright in Lloyd’s spirit came from his only grandson, Carter Kerr.

Lloyd is preceded in death by his father, Lonzo Kerr, Sr. (South Bend, IN), his mother, Leolia Kerr (South Bend, IN), his brother, Herman “Billy” J. Kerr (Alice, South Bend, IN), and his twin brother, Floyd Kerr (Vivian, Baton Rouge, LA). He is survived by his loving wife Maggie (Bolingbrook, IL), sons Lloyd Jr. and Schin (Bolingbrook, IL), daughter Chloé (Los Angeles, CA), grandson Carter, brother Lonzo Kerr, Jr. (Valvree, Austin, TX), sister Lois “Lovie” Vernice Osborne (Fred, South Bend, IN), and brother Raymond Webster Kerr (South Bend, IN), along with a host of cousins, nieces and nephews, sister-in-laws and brother-in-laws, and more that he loved dearly!
