SOUTH BEND - Michael J. Kalb, 64, passed away Monday afternoon, Oct. 15, in Hospice House. He was born October 6, 1943, in Langley Field, Virginia, to Roland F. and Phyllis (Wedel) Kalb. On June 1, 1968, he married the former Dorene L. Fouts. She preceded him in death August 22, 1972. On May 24, 1985, he married Ann Alkire, who survives along with his daughter, Danielle L. Kalb; his two stepdaughters, Alexis Fredericks (Michael) and Claudia A. Alkire; stepson, Richard A. Alkire; sister, Gail Coon (Jerry); six step-grandchildren, Laanan Fisher, Zeke Alkire, Lindsay and Morgan Fredericks, Macy and Lily Alkire, all of South Bend.

Michael graduated from Washington High School in 1962 and played center on the 60-61 football team that was conference champions in 1960. After graduation he enlisted in the United States Marine Corps and served his country with honor in the Republic of Vietnam.

Michael was a cement mason for 40 years. He belonged to Operative Plasterers and Cement Masons Local #101 and was a past president of the local. Michael was a member of the Alpaca Llama Show Association, enjoyed hunting and fishing, and was looking forward to going hunting this fall with his grandson, Zeke. Michael will be greatly missed by his family, who loved him very much. He will also be missed by his cat "Edgar" and dog "Buck," and his 15 llamas.

Funeral services will be held at 7:00 p.m. Thursday, October 18th, in the Welsheimer Family Funeral Home, 521 N. William St., where friends may call from 1:00 p.m. till time of services. Military rites will be held after services. According to his wishes, cremation will follow. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Elkhart County 4-H Lovable Llama Club's scholarship foundation, c/o Glen Unzicker, 17740 CR 14, Goshen, IN 46528.
