ANNIE A. (DEBAETS) MCGROGAN

Annie McGrogan was born February 12, 1940 in Balgerhoeke, Belgium to Amanda and Xavier DeBaets. On May 13, 1949, she came with her family to the United States.

She was a 1958 graduate of Washington High School and a 1961 graduate of the former Memorial Hospital School of Nursing. As a Registered Nurse, Annie worked at several local hospitals and schools until her retirement in 1992. On August 8, 1999, Annie survived a lung transplant necessitated by Alpha One Anti Trypson Syndrome. Annie was a resident of South Bend the majority of her life, enjoying her winter retirement years in Venice, Florida and along the Gulf Beaches of Western Florida.

Survivors include her husband of 20 years, Bob, of South Bend; brother, Walt DeBaets of South Bend; daughters Jackie Hutts and Patti Szymanski of South Bend and Step Sons Jim (Tina) and Bob McGrogan of South Bend and Tom (Heather) McGrogan of Roanoke, IN. Surviving grandchildren include, Courtney and Lauren Szymanski, Jim and Victoria McGrogan and Elise Hutts all of South Bend and Adam and Austin McGrogan of Roanoke, IN.

Annie was a very active volunteer for the St. Joseph County Red Cross Association and the Indiana Organ Procurement Organization as well as the former Kappa Sigma Tau Sorority, whose mission was to facilitate scholarships for nursing students. She was also a member of Holy Family Catholic Church. Annie passed away peacefully at Memorial Hospital on Sunday, October 8, 2006 after a sudden illness. Memorial contributions may be sent to the St. Joseph County Red Cross Organization, Indiana Organ Procurement Organization or Holy Family Catholic Church.

Visitation will be at Kaniewski Funeral Home 3545 N. Bendix Drive South Bend, Indiana, from 3:00-8:00 pm on Tuesday, October 10, 2006, with a rosary at 7:00pm and from 9:00-10:00am on Wednesday, October 11, 2006 with a funeral service immediately following.
