Marion Spychalski

MARION J. SPYCHALSKI

July 29, 1941 - June 8, 2009
SOUTH BEND - Marion Joseph Spychalski, 67, passed away after a brief illness on Monday, June 8, in Memorial Hospital. Marion was born in South Bend on July 29, 1941, to the late Clement and Esther (Gorski) Spychalski. On June 26, 1965, he married Patricia Wasowski at St. Casimir Catholic Church in South Bend. She survives with a daughter, Michele (Satish) Ramachandran of Sunnyvale, CA; and a son, Christopher (Jeannie) of South Bend. Also surviving are two grandchildren, Allen and Emma Spychalski; brother-in-law, Rev. Ronald Wasowski, C.S.C., of Portland, OR; sister, Germaine (David) Wuergler of Granger; nephews, Scott and Stuart Wuergler; niece, Sarah Smith, great-nephew; Liam Smith; great-nieces, Hazel and Rori Smith.

Marion was a graduate of Washington High School and Acme School of Design and Engineering.

As a journeyman tool and die maker, he worked for 40 years in area shops. He was past president of P.N.A. #83, a member and past Grand Knight of Knights of Columbus Council #4263 in Granger, a member and past Faithful Navigator of the Father Nieuwland Assembly Fourth Degree Knights of Columbus, and a member of St. Pius X Catholic Church in Granger, where he served as a lector and eucharistic minister. He coached boy's basketball at St. Pius X and also coached for the Harris Township Little League. He enjoyed golf with the guys but did almost everything else with Pat. They enjoyed traveling, especially to the Grand Canyon and Mackinac Island. They also enjoyed bowling, fishing, shopping, gardening and cooking together.

Marion was a do-it-yourselfer and a real handyman, a true handyman who could fix anything. Relatives and friends called him before they called a repairman. After he retired, he enjoyed spending time with Allen, Emma, Liam, Hazel and Rori, enhancing his computer skills, feeding and watching the birds, and spending time with his faithful companion, dog Zildjian. He was the best husband, father, grandfather, brother, brother-in-law, uncle and friend anyone could have. His love for people is evident in the fact that he was an organ donor. Marion was a true Catholic gentleman who had a special devotion to the Blessed Mother. When he had a bad day, he called himself Grumpa. We love you and miss you Grumpa, but you will be forever in our hearts.

Visitation will be held from 3 to 9 PM Thursday, June 11, 2009, in the Kaniewski Funeral Home, 3545 N. Bendix Drive, South Bend, where a combined parish and Knights of Columbus Rosary/vigil service will be prayed at 4 PM.
