Kay Hill (Carpenter)

KATHRYN J. "KAY" (HILL) CARPENTER

July 25, 1945 - Dec. 26, 2013 SOUTH BEND - Kathryn (Kay) Joan Carpenter, 68, passed away unexpectedly in her River Park home on Thursday, December 26, from natural causes. She had lived in South Bend all of her life. Kay was born on July 25, 1945, to Neva (Sharp) and Clark Hill in South Bend, IN. She grew up on Crumstown Highway, and was a proud Washington Panther. The Washington Fight Song was one of the first songs her kids learned as they grew up: "Washington High School hats off to thee...."

Kay married Reginald D. Carpenter Jr. on December 30, 1966. She remained close to his family after their subsequent divorce.

Ms. Carpenter was preceded in death by her parents, Reg, and her dear friends, Mary Ann Scott and Norman Mangus.

Ms. Carpenter is survived by three sons: James (Carolyn) of South Bend, Steven of Mishawaka and Glen (Beth) of South Bend; two brothers, Merrill (Sharon) Hill of Seffner, FL, and Dale (Glenda) Hill of Fishers, IN; two granddaughters, Linda and Amanda; and three grandsons, Timothy, Lucas, and Lawrence. Also surviving are many beloved nieces, nephews, cousins, and a "bonus" daughter-in-law, Ahna Carpenter.

Kay was a proud mom and grandma; she attended every school concert for which she was able (which was well over 100 when Jim & Glen were in the Clay Swing Choir!). If you spoke with her, it was inevitable that you'd see pictures of one or more of the grandkids. She also enjoyed talking with friends and family to hear about their lives and travels. Kay also LOVED Johnny Cash. Kay took a medical retirement from the St. Mary's Convent, where she had worked for many years as a nurse's aide. She also worked as an in-home health care provider.

Cremation has taken place. A short celebration of Kay's life will be held at Chapel Hill Funeral Home in Osceola at 11 am Tuesday, December 31, 2013, to which all are welcome. Memorial gifts are suggested to Clay Church Choir, or the Bethel College Choral Program. Online condolences may be sent to the Carpenter family at www.chapelhillmemorial.com.
