James Galwas Sr.
May 1, 1945 ~ February 28, 2024 (age 78)
James S. Galwas, Sr., 78 years old, passed away on Wednesday, February 28, 2024 at his residence in South Bend. James was born on May 1, 1945 in South Bend, IN to the late Stephen and Martha (Ebel) Galwas.
Left to cherish their memory of James are his children, James (Micki) Galwas, Jr. and Jennifer Galwas; grandchildren, Alexis Felty, Austin Albright, and Noah Galwas: sister, Joan Roberts; and several nieces and nephews.
James graduated from Washington High School in 1963. Upon graduation, he joined the United States Navy and proudly served his nation during the Vietnam war where he was based in Hawaii and the Pacific. After being honorably discharged, James worked at RACO, where he retired after 44 years.
James was a member of the American Legion Post 284, where he bartended every Friday night for 30 years. He was affectionately known as Jimmy by everyone in the club. James would always look forward to eating breakfast with his best friends, Larry Jarze, who he knew from gradeschool, and Chris Noetzel every Wednesday and Saturday at Allie’s Café. He also loved going to the casino and would routinely go every Thursday. Above all, James loved spending time with his family.
Visitation for James will be from 11:00 am to 1:00 pm on Friday, March 8, 2024 at St. Joseph Funeral Home, 824 S. Mayflower Rd., South Bend, IN with a Funeral Service to begin at 1:00 pm. Burial with Military Honors will immediately follow at St. Joseph Cemetery.
Memorial Contributions may be made in honor of James S. Galwas, Sr. to the American Legion Legacy Scholarship Fund.
