Michelle Elizabeth (Grounds) Widawski, 62 years old, peacefully passed away surrounded by her family on Monday, September 7, 2026, at her residence in South Bend.
Michelle was born on April 8, 1964 in South Bend, to Harold "Louie" and Carolyn (Pawelski) Grounds. She is also preceded in death by her father, Louie Grounds.
Left to cherish the memory of Michelle is her loving husband of 47 years, Bob Widawski; children, Bobbi (Kevin) Arndt, Melissa (Kyle) Sanderson, and Kimberly Widawski; grandchildren, Morgan (Adam), Kevin, Adam, Travis, Clayton, Theresa, and Liam; a great-grandson, Tripp; mother, Carolyn Grounds; siblings, Louie (Shannon) Grounds, Eric (Deana) Grounds, Lisa Grounds and Erica Grounds; as well as several nieces, nephews, and other extended family members.
Michelle worked as an Administrative Secretary at Navarre Middle School for 25 years, after previously serving as an Executive Secretary for the Sisters of St. Joseph of the Third Order of St. Francis. Early in her life, she was very involved with St. Stanislaus, Bishop and Martyr, where she helped lead many of the church’s decorations. Michelle was deeply compassionate and loved helping those around her. She was truly a living saint, living a life of selflessness and always putting the needs of her family, friends, and even strangers before her own. Michelle was a devoted Notre Dame fan and loved cheering on her Chicago Cubs. Outside of watching Notre Dame and Cubs games, however, you would rarely find Michelle sitting still. She always wanted to be active and doing something, whether hiking, camping, or simply spending time outdoors surrounded by nature. Above all, Michelle loved her family, and her grandchildren were the center of her world. She treasured every opportunity to have her family together, and any excuse to host a gathering was a good one—whether it was a birthday, Sunday dinner, or holiday. She loved cooking for those she loved, buying presents, and finding every possible way to make her family feel cared for and welcomed.
There will be a Celebration of Life held at a later date. St. Joseph Funeral Home is assisting the family with arrangements.
