James P. Schalliol, MD, fondly known to many as Jim, passed away on June 11, 2025, at the age of 82 in Mishawaka, IN. His was a life marked by dedication, compassion, and an unwavering commitment to the well-being of his patients. Born on October 6, 1942, in Washington, IN, to the late Paul M. Schalliol and Eleanor (Raymond) Schalliol, Jim set out from his small-town roots to leave an indelible mark on the world of psychiatry.
A proud graduate of Washington High School's Class of 1960, Jim's early promise of excellence continued as he furthered his education at Indiana University Medical School, where he emerged ready to heal and serve, earning his degree in 1967. His journey in medicine was complemented by a distinguished service in the navy, where he achieved the rank of Lieutenant Commander, exemplifying both his love for his country and his dedication to discipline and excellence.
Jim was a beacon of hope and a tower of strength for the countless lives he touched throughout his impressive 58-year career as a psychiatrist. His early years were spent at Porter Starke Memorial in Logansport, IN, where his patient-first ethos became the cornerstone of his practice. Going further to establish his own practice, he provided over 26 years of consistent, empathetic care to those navigating the complexities of mental health challenges.
For Jim, the pursuit of medical and psychological knowledge was a lifelong endeavor. He maintained active memberships in several prestigious organizations including the American Medical Association and the American Psychological Association. Additionally, from 1967 until his passing, he was a dedicated member of the Indiana State Medical Association, showcasing his commitment to staying at the forefront of advancements in his field.
Behind Jim's professional success was a heart that cherished family deeply. He was preceded in death by his parents; his devoted wife, Kathryn "Kace" (Wacknitz) Schalliol who passed on October 13, 2021, after many happy years of marriage since January 8, 1983; and his beloved brother-in-law, James Craney. His legacy will live on through his son, Kevin Alfrey, his sister, Linda (Gerald Newlin) Craney, niece, Meredith (Chad) Roach, Nephews, Neil Craney, and Reid Craney, great nephew Haedon, and great niece Ashlynn.
As a man of faith, Jim embraced his Christian beliefs which guided him through the highs and lows of life. His passion for service and leadership was evident even in his youth when he achieved the esteemed rank of Eagle Scout. This sense of purpose defined him and was woven into every aspect of his life.
A service will take place on Monday, June 16, 2025 at 1 p.m. in the Mausoleum at St. Joseph Valley Memorial Park 375 W. Cleveland Rd Granger, IN 46530. Military honor will also take place at the mausoleum.
