Raymond Bowles, 44, a former South Bend resident, died Thursday afternoon in a Washington area hospital of injuries suffered a day earlier when his car was struck on the 14th Street Bridge by an Air Florida jetliner that crashed into the Potomac River. Bowles' body was to be returned to South Bend on a military flight, according to his sister, Mrs. Daisy Lawrence Rogers of South Bend.

Mrs. Rogers said Bowles was an employee of a computer firm where he had been employed for about a dozen years, heading contract negotiations with the military.
Bowles, a Washington High School graduate, served 13 years in the Navy. In this area, he had worked for Wheel Horse Products, Inc.

Bowles was born in South Bend on Aug. 15, 1937. In addition to his sister, survivors include his parents, John H. Bowles Jr. and Mrs. Doris Goodwin, both of South Bend
