Henry Mitchell Murphy

August 10, 1943 ~ August 14, 2024 (age 81)

Henry Mitchell “Murph” Murphy, 81, passed away peacefully at his home on August 14, 2024.  Henry was the only child born to Cora Mae (Murphy) Edwards on August 10, 1943, in Union city, TN.  When just a young boy, Henry moved with his mother and other Murphy family members to South Bend, where he grew up as a “country boy.”  He attended Washington High School.

In 1964, Henry was inducted into the U.S. Army and moved to Norfolk, VA to begin serving with his wife, Delores Murphy.  To this union three children were born:  Larry, Kimberly “Patrice”, and Michael.  Henry was honorably discharged in 1970.

Henry received his Professional Truck Driving Diploma in 1972 from the International Transportation Institute, and then began his career driving for Greyhound based out of Detroit.  He disability retired in 1980 from a job he loved and moved back to South Bend.  There he met and later married Linda L. (Buress) Murphy in 1982.  They would have celebrated their forty-second wedding anniversary on August 27.

Henry received Christ at an early age, and was a member of Pilgrim Baptist Church, South Bend.  He loved his family, and was a beloved husband (“Murph”), Dad,/"Pops" and Granddad/Grandpa.  To his many cousins, Henry was more like an uncle or brother.  He had an amazing sense of humor, and was often told he could have his own comedy show that would rival “Sanford and Sons."  In his early years, Henry considered himself to be a Master Checker player and Bar-B-Q-er, and later a Master Fisherman.

His passions were Cowboy movies, Blues and Jazz music, and Fishing.  He loved to watch birds at his several birdfeeders and, when weather permitted, sit in a lawn chair outside his garage watching the comings and goings of the neighbors on the street.  He was known for “holding court” at Al’s Barber Shop.  Some years ago, Henry purchased his “Dream Car,”-a white 1964 Ford Galaxie 500.  He enjoyed driving around in his “White Gal,” showcasing his pride and joy and receiving compliments and “thumbs up" from countless admirers.  Upon becoming homebound, Henry enjoyed adult coloring, developing into quite an amateur artist, and gifting pages of his artwork to family members and friends.
