Lillie Pearl Lewis (Wells) - Class Of 1959 VIEW PROFILE

Lillie Pearl Lewis-Wells

Lillie Pearl, or "Pearl" to those who knew and loved her, passed away on April 11, 2024, at the age of 83. She was a woman with a great sense of humor and a whole lot of love to give. Pearl's life was a beautiful blend of dedication to God, her children, and always striving to be a better person.

Born on January 19, 1941 to Mary Lewis and later adopted by her stepfather, Robert Lewis, Pearl's journey began in Sardis, Mississippi (where she was regularly complimented for her singing and choir-directing talents at Shiloh Church) and took her to South Bend, IN, where she lived with her eldest sister Claudia and attended Washington High School. Her spiritual path was as important to her as her family, and she was a cherished member of Second Baptist Church, where she lovingly served as an usher, a deaconess, and the church's honorary "Mother."

Pearl, who was often complimented on her beautiful green/grey/bluish eyes, had a legendary sense of humor and a mischievous side, especially when it came to April Fool's Day. Her family never knew what prank she had up her sleeve, but they always fell for it! She loved a meticulously kept house, nice clothes, costume jewelry, Al Green, Fred Hammond, and "putting her feet under someone else's table." (In other words, she liked to go out to eat or when others cooked for her).

Throughout her life, Pearl wore many hats professionally, but she found true fulfillment in working with children at Harrison Elementary School. She was a source of inspiration for many young hearts and minds. People gravitated toward the love that was in her heart.

Family was everything to Pearl. She adored her children, grandchildren, and great grandchildren beyond measure, always seeking to be surrounded by their love and laughter. She talked about wanting twelve children but decided that eight were enough!

Pearl's legacy lives on through her and the love of her life, Arthur Lee Wells, Jr.'s (deceased) eight children: Jannifer (William), Beverly (Perry), Arthur III, Terrance, Andre (Allison), Debera (Marc), Cassandra, Tasha, and their families. She always put her children first, making countless sacrifices to ensure their well-being and imparting valuable life lessons along the way.

Pearl enjoyed over 30 grandchildren and great grandchildren, whom she cherished and who loved "Mam-maw" dearly.

She cherished her siblings: Claudia (deceased), Stella (deceased), Ruth, Irevia, Shawn (deceased), and Louis C (deceased); and many nieces, nephews, and honorary family members whom she looked out for and who looked out for her.

Pearl's unwavering love and dedication to her family and faith will be dearly missed by all who were fortunate enough to know her. In her memory, let's cherish the joy she brought into our lives and continue to spread love and laughter, just as she did.

Pearl's homegoing service will be held on Wednesday, April 24th. Viewing will be 10 a.m. - 12 p.m. and service will begin at 12 p.m., at Second Baptist Church, 24828 Fillmore Road, South Bend. Officiating will be Pastor Andre Wells, Sr. Arrangements entrusted with Alford's Mortuary Inc.
