Eugene “Gene” E. Lekarczyk

Eugene “Gene” E. Lekarczyk, 67, of Dowagiac, Mich., died following an illness on Tuesday in his home.

A memorial service celebrating his life will be held Saturday, Jan. 25, in Mission Hills Memorial Chapel, Niles, Mich., with Rev. Irwin Young and the Dowagiac VFW providing military rites. Cremation has taken place and inurnment will be at Mission Hills Memorial Gardens. Memorials in his memory may be made to Hospice at Home. Gene was born Oct.10, 1935, in South Bend, Ind., to Bert and Carrie (Szymanski) Lekarczyk.

Upon graduation, he served his country in the United States Army during the Korean War.Gene earned an associate’s degree in engineering and went on to work as a manager at Sunstrand Industries in Dowagiac for 27 years before his retirement.

On Oct.10, 1959, in Dowagiac, he married Alice Kafka, who survives. He is also survived by two sons, Todd L. Lekarczyk of Cassville, Mo., and Alan Lekarczyk of South Bend; four grandchildren, Marissa and Riley Lekarczyk, both of Cassville, and Kristina and Zachary Lekarczyk of South Bend; two brothers, Bert (Muriel) Lekarczyk of South Bend and Ray (Sharon) Lekarczyk of Marcellus, Mich.; and by a sister, Joyce (Walt) Jastrzebski of Marcellus
