SOUTH BEND - Joseph John Herczeg Jr., 85 passed away at 7 pm Monday, May 2, 2011 at home. Joe was born on March 30, 1926 to Joseph and Sarah (Mester) Herczeg. He was preceded in death by his parents and a sister, Rose Mary Bognar.

On May 7, 1949 in South Bend he married his high school sweetheart, Viola Theresa Tamandli in Our Lady of Hungary Catholic Church. Their first born was a daughter Linda (Randy) Murowski, later a son John Joseph (Cari) Herczeg was born. Joe also leaves two grandchildren Ashley (Phillip) DeSouza and John Herczeg; one great-grandson Nikolas Sebastian DeSouza.

Joe joined the United States Navy after graduating from Washington High School. On leave he met his next door neighbor, Joe Nagy in Sing tou, China. Aboard his ship, the U.S.S. Suffolk aka 69 was a classmate, John Taller, (now deceased) who lived a block away from Joe's future wife and later was a groomsman in their wedding. Joe worked at Studebaker's, Brink's, was a deputy sheriff, a tile setter, and lastly, a firefighter, retiring from the South Bend Fire Department in 1986. Joe was a member of the Hungarian Civic and Democratic Club, and D.F.V. German Club. He was a long time member of the Golden Hills V.F.W. 8748 and was a 64 year member of the American Legion Post 284.

He loved bowling, fishing, hunting, vacations at Fort Myers Beach, FL, and walking his Old English Sheepdogs in Rum Village Park.

Besides family and friends, he leaves his devoted Old English Sheepdog, Maggie Sue. Funeral services will be conducted at 11 am Saturday, May 7, 2011 in the Zahoran Funeral Home, 1826 Kemble Avenue. A funeral procession will follow through Rum Village Park. Cremation will follow with the burial of his ashes in Sacred Heart Cemetery. Family and friends may call from 4-8 Friday in the funeral home where a rosary will be recited at 5 pm. Memorial contributions may be made to Our Lady of Hungary Church or the Pet Refuge.
