Marion Philip Sylvester

Marion Philip Sylvester, 79, of Kenmore Street, South Bend, Ind., departed this life on Tuesday, Sept 21, in Hospice of St.Joseph County. Marion was born on Dec.11, 1924, in South Bend, to the late Philip and Mattie Sylvester (Chatman), and had lived here most of his life. His mother and father preceded him in death. One sister, Bernice Chatman, and his stepfather, Toby Chatman, also preceded him in death.

Marion was a member of Grace A.M.E.Zion Church most of his life. He graduated from Washington High School and attended Indiana University, Bloomington.He served in the U.S.Army during World War II, and received an honorable discharge in 1946.He retired from the United States Postal Service after 33 years of service.

His survivors include one nephew, Anthony (Tammy) Chatman of Clinton, Iowa;several cousins, Faygene Cannady, Lillian Stokes, Willa Kathleen Lottie, Juanita Harris, Carol Powell, Louise Davis, Sandra Davis, Leon (Lois) Davis Sr., Jewell Davis, all of South Bend, Betty Thomas of Quincey, Mass., and Eugene (Eleanor) Davis Jr. of Murfreesboro, Tenn.;and many more. Also, two very special longtime friends, Wilbur and Mary McDougal of South Bend.

Visitation service for Marion Philip Sylvester will be Saturday, Sept.25, in the Grace A.M.E. Zion Church, 1211 Vassar Ave. Visitation 10 a.m.;funeral services 11 a.m.Interment will follow the funeral services at Highland Cemetery, South Bend. The Clark-O’Neal Funeral Home has been entrusted with funeral arrangements
