Dorothy I. Mitchell

Aug. 10, 1925 -Feb. 20,1999

Dorothy I. Mitchell, 73, of 1001 West Battell Street, Mishawaka, Ind., passed away at 10 p.m. on Saturday, Feb. 20, in Millers Merry Manor in Culver, Ind.  Dorothy was born on Aug. 10, 1925, in South Bend, Ind., to Ode and Ida (Geiger) Mitchell. She was preceded in death by her parents; four brothers, Harrison Baker, Lyle Baker, Richard Baker and Eugene Baker; and by a sister, Catherine Sheetz.

She attended Culver public schools through the tenth grade, then moved to South Bend, attending Washington High School. She graduated in 1943. While at Culver she worked for Dr. Donald Reed, who encouraged her to take nurses training and become a nurse. She graduated from Methodist Hospital School of Nursing in Indianapolis in 1951.

After graduation she worked at the Northern Indiana Children's Hospital in South Bend from 1951 to 1960. In 1960 she came to the South Bend Clinic to work for Dr. Erickson in the Pediatric Department until her retirement in 1988. Mitch, as her fellow co-workers and friends called her, enjoyed her work with the many children patients at the clinic. She would often tell about the many children she had taken care of, always interested in their lives when they grew up, married and had children of their own.

At her retirement party, along with co-workers and employees, many of her previous patients came to greet and visit with her. She received two plaques, one as an employee of the clinic and one for service to the children of St. Joseph County. She was very proud of these awards. On her behalf, thank you all for your friendship to her and the many acts of kindness you have given her through the years.

Although she never married, she felt love from so many of you through your children. Thank you for making her life as a nurse so rewarding. She is survived by three sisters, Juanita Masters of Mishawaka, Daisy Cripe of Plymouth, Ind., and Marjorie Ann Baker of Culver; three brothers, Charles Baker of Culver, Norman Baker of Scottsdale, Ariz., and Russell Reinoehl of Mishawaka; and by several nieces and nephews, close cousins and many friends,

Services will be held at 2 p m. on Thursday, Feb. 25, at the Bonine Funeral Home in Culver, with Rev. Daniel J. Berger officiating. Interment will follow at the Culver Masonic Cemetery in Culver. The family will receive friends from 2 to 8 p.m. on Wednesday, Feb. 24, in the Bonine Funeral Home. Memorial contributions may be made to the Heart Fund or to the Dorothy I. Mitchell Scholarship Fund.
