Chester J. Kubiak
Chester J. Kubiak passed away on Saturday, April 27, 2014. Chester was born May 15, 1925 in South Bend to the late Constantine and Mary (Grontkowski) Kubiak. On October 12, 1946 in St. Hedwig Catholic Church Chester married Mary Rose (Kominowski) Kubiak; she passed away June 27, 2013. Chester and Mary Rose were high school sweethearts, they enjoyed dancing, playing tennis, and ice skating in their earlier years. They were married 66 years, but they knew one another for 71 years.
Chester was also preceded in death by a brother Eugene Kubiak.
Survivors of Chester include his daughters, Jeanne (Wayne) Kahlmorgan of South Bend, Karen (Douglas) Pace of South Bend, Rosanne (Richard) Kosik of Plymouth, MI, and Kathryn (Basil) Sparlin of Honolulu, HI; grandchildren, Shane (Dawn) Pace of South Bend, Dawn (Nate) Pace Giszewski of South Bend, Kristin (Ryan) Templeton of Canton, MI, Justin (Jackie) Kosik of Canton, MI, Kymberly Sparlin of Honolulu, HI, Brandon (Dori) Sparlin of Mililani, HI; and nine great-grandchildren.
He was employed with Studebaker and AM General from where he retired. He was a member UAW Local 5. Chester honorably served his country in the United State Air Force. He was a proud WWII veteran, European Campaign, 413th Bombardment Squadron (B-17), 96th Group, 8th Air Force. He was an armorer gunner, sharp shooter, and a radar jammer. He received numerous medals and awards. He also was a member of American Legion 357 where he received a 50 year certificate of continuous membership. H
e had a sense of humor and liked to tell "Chet" jokes. He enjoyed watching old movies especially old westerns. He was an avid Notre Dame and Chicago Bears fan. He loved sharing history. Chester very much enjoyed Mary Rose's cooking and her special desserts.
Per the wishes of the family there will be a private family service at Holy Family Catholic Church. Burial will follow at St. Joseph Cemetery with full military honors. St. Joseph Funeral Home, 824 S. Mayflower Rd. is assisting the family. In lieu of flowers, Memorial Contributions may be sent to American Legion 357, 5414 W.
