Irene (Dillard) Curry

SOUTH BEND — Mrs. Irene Curry of South Bend, Indiana, passed away in the Ironwood Health and Rehabilitation Center on Wednesday, November 14, 2012, at 11:35 a.m., following a brief illness. She was born on August 2, 1924, to the union of Charles and Sarah Dillard in Dyersburg, Tennessee, and was a resident of South Bend since childhood. She attended Kentucky State University, and then returned for employment with Hering House and the County Courthouse, before retiring from Bendix Corporation.
On November 5, 1949, in South Bend, she married Arthur K.Curry.She enjoyed traveling, bowling, bridge club, knitting, and was a member of several other clubs including The Drifters and The Majestic. She was affiliated with both the Charles Black and Martin Luther King Centers.
Irene was a member of The First African Methodist Zion Church, and was involved with the W.H.O.M.society, being their president for two years.She took great care volunteering and cooking for church events to feed the hungry.
She leaves behind to cherish her memory a son, Eric (Lucy) Curry of South Bend;seven grandchildren, Erica Curry of Colorado, Ashley and Jessica Curry of Florida, Gary (Lakesha) McNary, LaShawndra Bond, Elonda Bracey and Brien King, all of South Bend;and nine great-grandchildren.She also leaves two play-sisters, Ms.Ollie Scott and Mrs.Maxine Price, both of South Bend.
Irene was preceded in death by the love of her life, her husband of 44 years, Arthur K.Curry;her daughter, Mia Malone;her father, Charles Dillard;and her mother and stepfather, Sarah and Joseph Casey.
The family would like to give special thanks to Ms. Ollie Scott and Mr.Wally Brazy for their continued support and advice.In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Alzheimer’s Association at alz.org.
Funeral services for Irene Curry will be held on Tuesday, November 20, 2012, in First A.M.E.Zion Church, 801 N.Eddy.
