Louis A “Shorty” Bejma

Louis A Shorty Bejma, 72, of Chanute, father of Danny E. Brown of Humboldt, died Sunday, April 27, 1997, at Neosho Memorial Regional Medical Center in Chanute. He had been in poor health for three years. Bejma was born Nov. 6, 1924, at South Bend, Ind., the son of Louis A and Martha Kaiser Bejma.
He grew up in South Bend, where he attended school and was graduated from Washington High School prior to entering the military. He was a veteran of World War II, entering the U.S. Army in 1943 and serving in the European Theater. Following his discharge, he moved to Chanute to play baseball. He was a maintenance employee for Ash Grove Cement Co., retiring in 1986.
Prior to his employment with Ash Grove, he was a shortstop for the Chanute Athletics in the K.O.M. baseball league from 1946 to 1952. Bejma was a member of St. Patrick’s Catholic Church, American Legion Post No. 170 and Veterans of Foreign Wars Post No.1654.
On Nov. 1, 1947, he married Betty J. Brown at South Bend. She survives, as do another son, Larry D. Brown, Irving, Texas; a sister, Helen Pionski, St. Joseph, Mich.; five grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; and nephews and nieces.
A grandson, Randall Brown, died earlier.
Funeral Mass will be said at 10:30 a.m. Thursday by the Rev. Michael Maybrier at St. Patrick’s Catholic Church in Chanute. Burial will be in St. Patrick’s Cemetery. Graveside military rites will be conducted. Parish rosary will be recited at 7 p.m. Wednesday St. Patrick’s. Memorials to the Randall Brown Memorial Scholarship Fund at Humboldt National Bank or St. Patrick’s may be left at the funeral home. Gibson-Koch-Friskel Chapel, Chanute, is in charge of arrangements.
