Norman C. Bartkowiak

Norman C. Bartkowiak, 73, Crumstown Highway, South Bend, passed away at 5:40 p.m. Sunday, May 31, 1998. He was born May 29, 1925, South Bend, to the late Casimir and Sophia Bartkowiak, and lived in this area all his life.
On June 12, 1948, in South Bend, he married Aileen Andrzejewski, who survives. He also survived by two sons, Kenneth (Barbara) Bartkowiak South Bend and Michael Bartkowiak of Prescott, Ariz.; three granddaughters, Lisa, Stacy and Amy Bartkowiak, who will cherish his wonderful memory forever; one sister, Elaine Stodolny South Bend; one brother, Gerald Bartkowiak of South Bend; and his father-in-law, Bert Andrzejewski South Bend.
Preceding Mr. Bartkowiak in death was a brother, Joseph, who died in 1979.
Mr. Bartkowiak worked for the United States Post Office as a letter carrier for 26 years, retiring 1989. He was a Third Degree member of the Knights of Columbus Council 5570, and Fourth Degree, Father Nieuwland Assembly. He was a member of St. Joseph Young Men's Society, and Holy Family Catholic Church.
He was also a veteran of the United States Navy, serving during World War II. Mr. Bartkowiak was Storekeeper Third Class and fought in battles in the South Pacific.
Mr. Bartkowiak was a loving husband, father, brother and grandfather, who will probably be remembered most for his sensitivity, compassion, and witty sense of humor.
Services will be at 10 a.m. Thursday at Holy Family Catholic Church, 56405 Mayflower Road, South Bend, with Rev. Bernard Galic officiating. Entombment will follow in the St. Joseph Cemetery. Friends may call from 2 p.m. until 8 p.m. Wednesday in the St. Joseph Funeral Home, 824 S. Mayflower Road, where a Rosary will be said at 7:30 p.m. Memorial contributions may be made to the Holy Family Catholic Church Building Fund.
