Irish Legend. Trainer Gene Paszkiet had taken care of Irish athletes for over 31 years. Although his name has never in the headlines, he was an integral part of the Notre Dame athletic operation. In fact, he was essential, and every Irish coach knew it. A gruff, no-nonsense kind of guy, Paszkiet flat out refused to cooperate when the Notre Dame sports information office wanted to write a feature about him in a football program. He had no need for the spotlight, no need for public recognition. He just wanted to do his job, and he did. He did it very well. A native of South Bend, Paszkiet played football at Washington High and enrolled at Purdue after graduation, but he was called into military service and left school before completing a semester.

After a stint in the Coast Guard, Paszkiet attended Notre Dame and played on the 1946 freshman football team. But he left the playing field to work on the sidelines as a student athletic trainer, a position he held until his 1950 graduation. Paszkiet spent two years as the athletic trainer for former Notre Dame coach Hugh Devore at NYU. Paszkiet returned to his alma mater in 1952 when athletic director Moose Krause named him head Of the training staff. Shortly after the 1983 football season, Paszkiet, who ironically never liked visiting doctors himself, died following a brief illness.
