Samuel W. Bibb Sr.
Dec. 16, 1918- Feb. 22, 2005
Samuel William Bibb Sr., 86, of North Chicago Street, South Bend, Ind., died following an extended illness on Wednesday, Feb. 22, in Memorial Hospital. Mr. Bibb had been a resident of Fountain View Place, Mishawaka, Ind. for the past 20 months. Samuel William Bibb Sr. was born Dec. 16, 1918 to John Henry and Nancy Bibb in Smithville, Miss.; his family moved to South Bend when he was two years old. Mr. Bibb was a graduate of Washington High School, South Bend.
In the early 1940s, Mr. Bibb was a professional boxer and won the Golden Glove during that period but retired from the ring a few years after his marriage on July 20, 1941 to LaVonne Wilmeda O'Neal who preceded him in death in June, 2003. Mr. Bibb was one of six children and was also preceded in death by brothers, Frederick, Osborne, John, Howard Bibb and sister Christine Claybrooke. Mr. Bibb was also preceded in death by a son, Samuel William Bibb Jr.
Mr. Bibb was a faithful member of Grace A.M.E. Zion Church for many years and leaves to cherish his memory a daughter, Yvonne M. Claybrooke of San Jose; son Steven L. Bibb of Chicago, three granddaughters, Schorre Philyaw of Santa Clara, Calif., Chantini Claybrooke of San Jose and Ragina Russell of Santa Clara; a grandson, Cecil Claybrooke Jr. Of Santa Clara; eight great-grandchildren; and a host of nieces and nephews.
Graveside service for Mr. Samuel William Bibb Sr. will be held on Wednesday, March 2, at 1 p.m. in Highland Cemetery, South Bend. The Clark-O'Neal Funeral Home has been entrusted with arrangements.
