Aloysius Anthony "Al" Slaby

Aloysius Anthony "Al" Slaby , 69, of South Bend, went home to be with the Lord at 3:15 p.m. Tuesday, January 24, 2006, in Our Lady of Peace Hospital after a courageous two-year battle with cancer.
Al was born on October 12, 1936, in South Bend, to Alex and Jane (Wawrzyniak) Slaby . He was preceded in death by his father, and by a sister, Patricia Luberts.
Al is survived by his beloved wife, Mary Susan "Sue" Slaby , and four children, Tom (Margaret) Slaby of Madera, CA, Amy (John) Flaugher of South Bend, Linda Carroll of South Bend and Jenny Forkner of South Bend. Also surviving are his six grandchildren, Zak, Joseph, Ashley, Jacob, Joshua and Maddie, whom he dearly loved. Also surviving are his mother, Jane Slaby of South Bend; his siblings, Mary Jane Tekip of Punta Gorda, FL, Rose (Richard) Coverdill of Enfield, CT, Stella (Eugene) Chlebowski of South Bend, Wanda (William) Bain of Schaumburg, IL, Vincent (Helen) Slaby of New Carlisle, IN, David (Darlene) Slaby of Chattanooga, TN, and Carol (Larry) Friend of South Bend; and numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.
Al graduated from Washington High School, then proudly served his country in the United States Navy during the Korean War. He retired from the Waterfield Insurance Agency in 2000 after serving as an independent agent for more than two decades. As a member of the Mishawaka Breakfast Exchange Club, he served his community and fellow citizens for more than a quarter century. As a member of Community Baptist Church, he enjoyed faithfully serving others and his Lord daily.
Al was an avid runner who competed in several major events, the highlight being the 1991 Marine Corps Marathon in Washington, D.C. He was a lifelong fan of Notre Dame athletics, and in recent years enjoyed cheering on the girls' basketball team, especially at the 2001 National Championship Game in St. Louis. As a golfer, he always anticipated competing in the Brothers Invitational golf tournament. No matter the sport or occasion, Al brought enough enthusiasm and joy to be shared with all who had the pleasure to know him.
Friends may call from 4 to 8 p.m. Friday, January 27, 2006, in Palmer Funeral Home-Guisinger Chapel, 3718 S. Michigan St., South Bend, IN, and one hour prior to the services in church on Saturday. Services will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, January 28, 2006, in Community Baptist Church, 5715 Miami Road, South Bend. Burial will follow at Southlawn Cemetery, 61300 U.S. 31 S., South Bend, where military rites will be conducted.
