Leonard L. "Mr. D" Deranek, 65, of Morton Drive, Dowagiac, Mich., died at 12:30 p.m. on Friday, June 9, in Memorial Hospital, South Bend, Ind. Mr. Deranek was born on Sept. 9, 1934, in South Bend.
He lived in Dowagiac for five years, coming from South Bend. He retired in 1992 from Clay High School in South Bend. He taught at Clay High School and Middle School for 32 years, and was a swimming. baseball and football coach at the Clay High and Middle schools. He was a member of the Lambda Chi Alpha Fraternity, Loyal Order of Moose Lodge in Dowagiac, the Cass County Senior Center, and was a Navy veteran of the Korean War.
He is survived by two daughters, Michelle (Delbert) Wilson of Dowagiac and Jacqueline (Robert) Kapiszka of South Bend, a son, Timothy (Sara) Deranek of South Bend; two sisters, Virginia (Robert) Wesolowski of South Bend and Darlene (Harvey) Cain of Edwardsburg, Mich.; his brother. Casimer (Shirley) Deranek of South Bend; and by four grandchildren, Diane Wilson of Dowagiac, Erik Root of Indianapolis, and Jessica and Dominick Kapiszka, both of South Bend.
Family and friends may call from 2 to 5 p.m. and from 6 to 8 p.m. on Monday, June 12. in the St. Joseph Funeral Home. 824 S. Mayflower Road, South Bend where a Rosary will be prayed at 4 p.m. on Monday. Services will be at 10 a.m. on Tuesday in St. Adalbert Catholic Church, with burial to follow in St. Joseph Cemetery. Memorial contributions may be made to the American Cancer Society, 535 W. Edison, Unit #6, Mishawaka.
