April 8, 1934 - April 14, 2000

Florence Ruth Bethel-Spriggs, 66, beloved mother, grandmother and sister, who resided on Elwood Avenue, South Bend, Indiana, passed away at 8:43 p.m. Friday, April 14, 2000, at Memorial Hospital, following a sudden illness. On April 8, 1934, Florence was born to the union of Mack and Myra (Chambers) Bethel in Cairo, Illinois. Coming from Cairo, Florence moved to South Bend in 1940 and graduated from Washington High School in 1952, South Bend.

Florence spent fifteen years of service with the Northern Indiana Children's Hospital, and in 1998 retired from Memorial Hospital after seventeen years of service there. After her retirement she was an acting substitute teacher for special needs children in the South Bend Community School Corporation.

Loving family members who will cherish Florence's memory include her children, Michelle Lee of Vallejo, California, Gordon (Sandra) Bethel of South Bend, Indiana, Vernon Collier of Kansas City, Kansas, Jackie Reed of Indianapolis, Indiana, Shawn (Shiloh) Spriggs of San Diego, California; a very special friend, Clarence Henderson; grandchildren, Kevin (Kim), Vergina and Charles of Indianapolis, Indiana, Marco and Temeka of Vallejo, California, Feleahcia of San Diego, California, Casey and Corey of Kansas City, Kansas, Rakea, Michael, Ikisha, Dominique and Kenisha, all of South Bend, Indiana; great-grandchildren, Ariel, Ebony, Marcus, Kiara, Alexiss, Darian, Meckenzie and Miquan; her mother, Myra Bethel of South Bend, Indiana; two sisters, Anna (Harold) McCauley of South Bend, Indiana, and Patricia Williams of Los Angeles, California; and five brothers, Marvin (Shirley) Bethel of Sacramento, California, Curtis (Georgia) Bethel of South Bend, Indiana, Hayward (Mary) Bethel of Austin, Texas, Recie Bethel of Los Angeles, California, and Kenny (Betty) Bethel of Grand Rapids, Michigan; and a host of nieces, nephews, other. relatives and friends.

Funeral services for Ms. Spriggs will be held at 1:00 p.m. Thursday, April 20, at Olivet A.M.E. Church, where friends may call one hour before the service. Interment will follow in Highland Cemetery. Alford's Mortuary has been entrusted with arrangements.
