Howard E. “Red” Long
May 20, 1932 – April 28, 2003
Howard E. “Red” Long, 70, of 11191 N.E. Wawasee Drive, Syracuse, Ind., passed away after an illness at 5:45 a.m. Monday, April 28, in his home. He was born on May 20, 1932, to Howard and Jeanette Long in South Bend, Ind.
In his years of growing up, he enjoyed hunting and fishing. While attending Washington High School, he participated in the music and drama departments. He was also elected senior class president.
On April 5, 1951, he married Rosemarie Patnaude. Red is survived by his wife, Rosemarie; a son, Greg (Sheree) Long of Syracuse; three daughters, Sherry (Jerry) Cappert of Lake Villa, Ill., Valerie (Rick) Shipley of Cromwell, Ind., and Angela (Nathan) Pool of Fortville, Ind.; 11 grandchildren; and by a sister, Carol Andrews of South Bend.
Once the kids were grown, they were able to enjoy extensive traveling and indulge in ethnic foods and gourmet cooking. Family gatherings always brought great joy to all. In 1971 he acquired Ace Exterminating from his father, and in June 1972 the family moved to Lake Wawasee to be more centrally located for the company, renamed Ace Pest Control Inc. He was very active within the pest control industry, serving as president of the Indiana Pest Control Association, and was appointed to many committees of the National Pest Control Association. Locally, he was involved with Rotary International, the Alcoholic Beverage Commission, the Turkey Creek Sewer Board, and was a member of the Maxwelton Golf Club. He continued his love for fishing, beautiful sunsets and nature, especially bluebirds.
After retiring, his hobbies included golfing and gardening, and he rekindled his love for oil painting. “Red” was well-known as a type of philosopher. With his strong beliefs he passed on morals, integrity, humor, knowledge, and a passion for life to not only his family members but to all he touched. He made a great impression on many, and has graced us all with wonderful memories.
A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. Sunday, May 4, in the Oakwood Center at the Academy Hall, with Harlan Steffen officiating.
