Ervin J. Gerschoffer

STEVENSVILLE - Ervin J. Gerschoffer, 81, of Stevensville, MI passed away on Sat., June 28, 2014 at Woodland Terrace in Bridgman, MI. Arrangements have been entrusted with Starks & Menchinger Chapel in St. Joseph, MI. Erv was born on May 9, 1933 in South Bend, IN. He was raised by his parents, George and Lillian (Hojara) Gerschoffer.
After high school he served his country while in the U.S. Army. Erv then joined the South Bend City Police Dept. as a traffic officer and worked his way through various positions until he retired in 1977 as Lieutenant; he received many letters of accommodation and was a devoted officer. Erv then worked at the Cook Nuclear Plant in Bridgman for 20 years in security, retiring in 1995. He was a member of the Stevensville American Legion Post #568; a member of the FOP in South Bend; and an active member of St. Joseph Catholic Church.
Erv was an avid golfer and league member at Pebblewood Golf Course. He would wake early - 5:30am - to go golfing and hunt golf balls, which he gave away to school golf teams and his many friends. Erv was also known as the 'candyman', as he often gave away sweets. He loved working in his yard, making it look immaculate, just as a golf course. Erv was a loving husband and a devoted father, and will be greatly missed.
He is survived by his wife Gladys P. Cole whom he married on Nov. 30, 1957 in South Bend, IN; three children: Jeffry (Debbie) Gerschoffer of Sugar Land, TX, Donald Gerschoffer of St. Croix, U.S. Virgin Islands, and Steven Gerschoffer of Chicago, IL; four grandchildren: Justin, Courtney, Kaitlin and Nicole; a great- granddaughter, Brealynn; a brother, Sylvester (Christine) Gerschoffer of South Bend; and a sister, Virginia Kusmiez of South Bend.
Erv is preceded in death by his parents, George and Lillian, and a son, Michael.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Thursday, July 3, at 11:30 am, at St. Joseph Catholic Church, 211 Church St., St. Joseph, MI, with Father James Morris officiating. Committal services will follow at Riverview Cemetery in St. Joseph. Memorial contributions may be made to the Alzheimer's Association or to the American Cancer Society .
