George M. Wincek

April 6, 1920- June 18, 2005

George M. Wincek, 85, a lifelong resident of South Bend, passed away Saturday, June 18, 2005 in Memorial Hospital. He was born on April 6, 1920, in South Bend, to the late Frank and Elizabeth (Demko) Wincek Sr. George graduated from the Old Washington High School with the class of 1938.

On September 29, 1945 in South Bend, George married Barbara M. Tekler. George was an active member of Corpus Christi Church, a member of the Perpetual Adoration Group at Corpus Christi, was among the first to serve as Euchaurtic Lay Minister for the church. Padre Pio Prayer Group, a member of St. Hedwig Golden Cluster Club. He also had served his country proudly during World War II and was a veteran of the U.S. Army. He was a member of American Legion Post 50.

After 33 years of service with the U.S. Postal Service as a letter carrier he retired on July 3, 1975. He belonged to the Letter Carriers National Association Branch 330 in South Bend, and the Federation of Chapter 145 in South Bend. George was a member of Knights of Columbus Council 553 where he served as an advocate, Father Nieuland Assembly Fourth degree as Faithful Comptroller and a member and volunteer at Leighton Center for Senior Health.

George is survived by his wife, Barbara Wincek of South Bend; his daughter, Barbara Lee (Michael) Carey of Clarks Summit, Pa.; three grandchildren, Shannon (James) Keegan of Elkridge, Md., Sean Carey of York, Pa., and Chad Carey of Hazelton, PA and two great-granddaughters, Briana Carey and Kayleigh Keegan; his sister, Kathrid (Charles) Rhodes of South Bend and his brother, Stephen Wincek of South Bend. He was preceded in death by his parents; a sister, Ann Shirley; and a brother, Frank Wincek Jr.

Friends may visit with the family, today, Monday, June 20 form 3 to 8 p.m. in the Welsheimer Family Funeral Home, 521 N. William Street, South Bend. A Rosary will be said at 7 p.m. with the Knights of Columbus. A Mass of Christian Burial will be Tuesday, June 21, at 10 a.m. in Corpus Christi Catholic Church. Burial will follow at Highland Cemetery
