In Memory
Alex G. Nyers
Alex G. Nyers was born November 16, 1920 in McMechen, West Virginia to Stephen & Christina Nyers and was the ninth of eleven children. The family moved to the Hungarian neighborhood in South Bend, Indiana where Alex attended Oliver Elementary School and graduated from Washington High School. He was involved in William Penn Association (Verhovy) and participated in Hungarian Harvest Dances.
Alex served in the U S Army as a medic in the 99th Infantry Checkerboard Division, which advanced the first line in the Battle of the Bulge. Returning from the war he worked at Hines VA Hospital in Chicago, IL. He returned to South Bend to reside with and care for his elderly parents and became employed at the U. S. Post Office, which he retired from after 37 years of devoted service, first at the claims window, then as administrative assistant to the postmaster and lastly is the position of Training Officer.
Alex married Irma Antal on October 10, 1959 and they raised six children together, seeing to their Catholic upbringing. Alex enjoyed socializing with his extended family and keeping the family heritage alive with his love for baking Hungarian delicacies: kalacs, kiffles, retes, etc. and was famous for his lemon meringue pies! He enjoyed gardening, canning, taking the family fruit-picking and on excursions to nearby parks and lakes.
Needing to keep occupied after retirement, Alex took a part-time job at 7-11 on Mishawaka Avenue and then at the Morris Inn of Notre Dame working their gift shop and serving lunches at their patio tail-gates during ND football games. He became a real “Domer”!
Alex was a devoted Catholic, with a special devotion to the Blessed Virgin Mary. He was a member of and sung in the choirs of Our Lady of Hungary and St. Mary of the Assumption parishes, the latter where he also served as lector and Eucharistic Minister.
Living a full life and surviving several health challenges with compromised mobility he recently moved to Brookdale Senior Living in Granger, Indiana, where he made many new friends and was involved in daily activites. Following his latest health challenge he entered Hospice care at Raclin House in Mishawaka. He passed away peacefully in the loving embrace of his surviving children to enter his well deserved heavenly reward.
Alex was predeceased by his wife Irma (Antal) Nyers, daughter Margaret (Nyers) Wolf, and son Matthew Nyers. He is survived by his children: Richard Nyers (Ken Bascue), Mary Nyers, George Nyers (Marianne), and Rose (Nyers) Burns (Jim); grandchildren: Jennifer (Nyikos) Corsiatto, Gregory Nyikos, Noah & Michael Nyers, Constance (Burns) Sanchez, James Burns, Alicia (Burns) Johnston; and great-grandchildren: Anthony, Catalia, Dylan, Santiago, Lucia & Anabelle Sanchez, Alianna & Nathan Johnston and Gianni Martinez.
