SOUTH BEND - Joseph Paul Holobyn, 83, passed away on Sunday, February 6, 2011, in his home. Joseph was born on October 9, 1927, to the late Paul and Dora (Kanuga) Holobyn in South Bend. He was also preceded in death by his first wife, Anna Tamburini, and daughter, Dori Walsh. Joseph was married for 22 years to Virginia (Wagner) Holobyn, who survives him along with sons, Joseph (Tambra) Holobyn Jr., Thomas (Joleen) Holobyn; and son-in-law, Mike Walsh; daughter, Amy Jo Holobyn; seven grandchildren, Michael, Charles, James, Tommy, Eric, Holly and Joseph; two great-grandchildren, Anya and Gabriel. As well as Virginia's grandchildren who will sorely miss their "Grandpa Joe": Michelle, Jennifer, Raymond, Marcie, Kris, Nickey, Travis, Jocelyn and Kyle.

Joseph graduated from Washington High School, and in 1944 he was their starting tailback when they won the State Football Championship. He also lettered in basketball and baseball. Joe was an avid Notre Dame fan. He worked as a carpenter until retirement. Not only was this his profession, but his children, family members and his friends all benefited from his knowledge and his craftsmanship in his trade.

There will be a memorial service at a later date. ST. JOSEPH FUNERAL HOME, 1827 E. Ireland Road, is assisting the family with arrangements.
