John E. Byers Sr

SOUTH BEND - John E. Byers Sr., 78, of Addison Street, died at 8:30 p.m. Sunday in Memorial Hospital.

Mr. Byers retired in 1979 as principal at the Jackson Middle School. He served as a principal for 27 years and teacher for 15 years for the South Bend Community School Corp.

He was born Feb. 28, 1915, in South Bend and was a lifelong area resident On June 26, 1943, in Seattle, he married Betty Ehrmin. She survives with four sons, John Jr. of Granger, Tom E., Philip E, and James E., all of South Bend; seven grandchildren; a sister, Harriet Mikel of South Bend; and a brother.

Mr. Byers was a graduate of Indiana Central College and Indiana University. He was a veteran of World War II and received the Purple Heart and Bronze Star. He was a teacher at Washington High School and principal at Muessel, Lincoln and Hamilton elementary schools and Riley High School. He served as director of secondary education for two years.

He was former president of the Rotary Club, a volunteer for United Way, active in Boy Scouts of America, president of South Bend Principals Association, a member of Phi Delta Kappa and National Association of Secondary School Principals and Elementary School; Principals and served on several boards at First United Methodist Church.

Services will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday in First United Methodist Church. Burial will be in Riverview Cemetery. Friends may call from 6 to 8 p.m. in Welsheimers Funeral Home.
