Mr. Herman Lathan-Scott, 79, passed away on Tuesday, September 12, 2023. He was born in Lorman, Mississippi on September 19, 1943. His birth parents were Ellis and Ellen Scott, Sr.; they preceded him in death. Herman moved to South Bend, Indiana in 1942 when he was three years old and was raised as a son by his late uncle and aunt, Herman Lathan and Rebecca Scott-Lathan.      

Herman was educated in the South Bend School system and graduated from Washington High School. Following graduation, he enlisted in the U.S. military and served in the Air Force and the Navy. When Herman completed his military Tour of Duty he returned to South Bend and opened an auto body shop where he repaired vehicles.

In 1966 in South Bend he was united in marriage to Delores J. Smith. The two of them were blessed with two children:  Keena Scott Njoroge and Ayeshah Scott Lara. In 1979 Herman returned to Mississippi where he acquired some land and built a house and started a business. He was the owner of a bar called the Candy Bar and he also had a farm with cows and horses. Having already received a bachelor’s degree, he later in life attended his mother (Rebecca’s) alama mater, Alcorn State University in Mississippi and earned a Master’s Degree in Agricultural Science.

Herman was a man who enjoyed life and had many hobbies. Among his favorites was shooting pool, horseback riding, listening to music, hunting, reading and tending to the animals on his farm. Herman was a member of the Free Mason’s Lodge of Mississippi.

Herman is survived by his daughters, Keena Scott-Njoroge, Ayeshah Scott Lara, and Sonya Brown; one brother, Thomas Scott; one sister, Doris Ann Scott-Robertson; grandchildren, Tahlany Gullens, Siahna Njoroge, Miracle Lara, Foxx Lara, Phoenix Lara, Mystic Lara, Warren Thomas, William Thomas, Saniya Mavindidze, Mia Mavindidze and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.
