Nathaniel L. Roberts

Nathaniel Lee Roberts, 73 of Alonzo Watson Drive, South Bend, IN, passed away at 4:30 a.m. Friday, September 23, 2005, in Hospice of St. Joseph County. Nathaniel was born on January 8, 1932, in South Bend, IN, to the late Clabe Roberts Sr. and Ida Jones Roberts, who preceded him in death. On January 10, 1997, he was united in holy matrimony to Velma Lax Roberts, who preceded him in death in 2002. Nathaniel was a former member of Olivet A.M.E. Church. In 1950 he graduated from Washington High School. He served in the United States Army during the Korean War, and received an honorable discharge on December 1, 1953. He retired from the Clark Equipment Company after many years of service.
He is survived by his sister, Willa Bell Roberts of West Point, MS; four special cousins/caretakers, Arthena Roberts Wilson, along with Tina Roberts-Wilson and Torrence Roberts-Clark, all of South Bend, and Todd (Adrienne) Wilson of Fayetteville, NC, who all respected Nathaniel as a "Grandfather." Other survivors include a cousin, Phyllis Roberts of Indianapolis, IN; nieces, Elaine Roberts Boswell, Kathy Roberts, Sheryll Harris and Brenda Harris, all of South Bend, and Susan (Michael) Harris-Young of Dallas, TX; nephews, David Harris of Dallas, TX, Ryan (Telina) Boswell and Tyron (Jana) Harris, all of South Bend; stepdaughters, Donna (Lee) Scott-Haynes and Pamela (Bruce) Pfeiffer, both of South Bend; stepsons, Bobby Mitchell, Frank Jr., Herbert, David, Ronald (Vivian) and Darryl (Angela) Lax, all of South Bend, Durrell (Towanda) Lax of Woodbridge, VA, Arthur (Tommie) Lax of Kankakee, IL, and Jerry (Carolyn) Lax of Germany.
He was preceded in death by his wife; parents; a sister, Bessie Roberts; brothers, Charles Roberts and Clabe Roberts Jr.; nephews, Adell Roberts and Terrell Roberts Wardlow; and a stepson, Raymond Lax.
Services for Mr. Nathaniel L. Roberts will be Friday, September 30, 2005; visitation 11:00 a.m., funeral service noon in the Clark-O'Neal Funeral Home, 2702 Lincoln Way West. Burial will follow funeral services at Highland Cemetery. The Clark-O'Neal Funeral Home has been entrusted with the services
