Robert Eugene Ogorek

Sept. 26, 1932 – Aug. 28, 2003 

Robert Eugene Ogorek, 70, of South Bend, Ind., passed away at 5:15 a.m.on Thursday, August 28, after a long and valiant battle with cancer. Bob was born on September 26, 1932, to Walter and Lottie (Kaczmierczak) Ogorek.He was preceded in death by his brothers, Matt, Frank, Ervin;and a sister, Genevieve “Jean ”Yale. He is survived by a brother, Donald of Seattle, Washington, and sister, Patricia Sarabyn of South Bend.

On September 6, 1958, he married Marlene Meert, who survives, and to whom he was a devoted husband for nearly 45 years. Their family includes sons, Keith (Becky) of Indianapolis, Ind., Kathryn (Jim) Dimos of Indianapolis, Ind., Kenneth (Melissa) of Pittsburgh, Penn., and Kurt of South Bend, all of whom survive. In addition, he was a cherished grandfather to Rachel and Emily Ogorek, Jennifer, Stephanie and Jonathan Dimos, and John and Lottie Ogorek.

Bob grew up on Warren Street in South Bend, attended St. Adalbert’s and graduated from Washington High School in South Bend. Following that, he attended Ventura Junior College in Ventura, Calif., on a basketball scholarship and graduated from Stanford University. He was proud of his Polish heritage and enjoyed Polka dancing and kielbasa throughout his life. He was also an avid sports fan and especially loved his Cubbies. A member of the Die-Hard Cub fan club, he never wavered in his confidence that the Cubs would win.

In addition, he was a great supporter of youth athletics and attended hundreds of games over the years of his children, nieces, nephews, grandchildren and friends. He was also a member of M.R.Falcons and Corpus Christi parish, where he served as a lector and was a participant of the Holy Eucharist hour and the St.Anthony Novena. For most of his career, Bob worked at Fuller-O’Brien paints, but retired from Koontz-Wagner in 1995. In the years since then, he loved golfing with family and friends, playing cards and monthly lunches with his Warren Street Gang.Bob will always be remembered for his warmth, sense of humor, commitment to his Catholic faith, and love for his wife and family.

Visitation will be held from 3 to 8 p.m.on Monday, September 1, in the Kaniewski Funeral Home, South Bend, Ind., where a Rosary will be said at 4 p.m.A Mass of Christian Burial will be said on Tuesday, September 2, at 10 a.m. in the Corpus Christi Catholic Church.Burial will follow at Highland Cemetery. Because Bob was such an avid supporter of youth sports, the family requests memorial contributions be made to the Corpus Christi Athletic Fund, 2822 Corpus Christi Drive, South Bend, IN 46628;or to Hospice of St.Joseph County, 111 Sunnybrook Court, South Bend, IN 46637-3437
