Floyd Chester Smith - Class Of 1951 VIEW PROFILE

 

Floyd C. Smith

Floyd C. Smith, 89, of Granger, IN, passed away at 3:49 a.m. Saturday, May 27, 2023 at the Center for Hospice Care- Raclin House in Mishawaka, IN, following a brief illness.

He was born on September 17, 1933 to the late Peter and Ethyl (McCullom) Smith in South Bend, IN, and was a lifelong area resident. Along with his parents; Floyd was preceded in death by a brother, Peter Smith.

Floyd graduated in 1951 from Washington High School in South Bend, IN, before serving in the U.S. Army from 1954-1956. He retired in April 1996 from E.P.W. in Elkhart, IN, where he worked as a Wood Pattern Maker for 10 years. Previous to that, he worked for several years at Garvey Pattern Works in South Bend, IN.

On November 15, 1952, he married Irene E. Arelt at St. Adalbert Catholic Church in South Bend, IN. Floyd is survived by his loving wife of 70 years, Irene E. Smith of Granger, IN; two sons, David (Pam) Smith of Fort Wayne, IN; Thomas (Missy) Smith of Osceola, IN; four grandchildren, Justin, Courtney, Austin, and Riley Smith; one great grandson, Nolan Smith; one brother, Harold (Pat) Smith of South Bend, IN; and a sister-in-law, Joan Smith of Fort Wayne, IN.

Floyd was a member of Christ the King Parish and the Pattern Makers Union of America, where he held many offices in the union. He was a little league coach for baseball and basketball for several years. Floyd was an avid golfer, PGA fan, and Notre Dame sports fan.

Visitation will be from 10 a.m. until 12 p.m. Saturday, June 3, 2023 at Kaniewski Funeral Home, 3545 N. Bendix Drive, South Bend, IN 46628. A Catholic Funeral Service will follow at 12:00 p.m. Saturday in the funeral home, where Military Honors will be conducted. Cremation will follow.
