HELEN GEORGINA  "DORDY" VOLL

SOUTH BEND - Helen Georgina Voll died peacefully in her sleep on November 30, 2010, in home in South Bend, IN, following a long illness. Georgina, affectionately known as "Dordy" to family and friends, was born in South Bend on April 28, 1927, to Bernard John and Helen Holland Voll. Georgina received a Bachelor of Arts degree in English from Trinity College, Washington, D.C., and earned a Master of Arts degree in English Literature from the University of Minnesota. She was a former member of the National Council of Teachers of English and the National Education Association.

Georgina retired from Washington High School where she was the first Head of the English Department, a position she held for 30 years.

Always the educator, Georgina taught Greek Mythology at the Forever Learning Institute and was a volunteer tutor at St. Adalbert's Grade School. She mentored and helped educate two young women, Emma and Prediganda Assenga, who came to study at Saint Mary's College from the village of Kilema in Tanzania. She was very involved in the lives of her eleven nieces and nephews and their families, sharing her passion for learning. Georgina was a lifelong member of St. Patrick's Catholic Church where she served on the parish council, was a lector and a Eucharistic minister to the sick. She was a member of the Christ Child Society and a Hospice volunteer.

Georgina was a loyal Notre Dame football fan; she enjoyed playing bridge and was an avid reader. An enthusiastic traveler, she traveled extensively throughout the United States and around the world experiencing a rich variety of customs and cultures. Her favorite cities were Washington D.C. and Rome, Italy.

Georgina is survived by her sister, Mary Theresa Coquillard (George) and her brother, William Voll (Virginia); her dear friend, Ann Korb all of South Bend; her nieces and nephews, Nancy Pietrangeli of South Bend, William Voll, Jr. (Ann) of Mishawaka, IN, John Voll (Karen) of South Bend, Susan Galbraith (Mark) of Winchester, VA, Virginia Prochaska (Joseph) of Northfield, IL, Mary Fisher (Kenneth) of Onekama, MI; Patricia McBride (Timothy), of South Bend, Bernard Voll (June) of Williston, ND, Michael Voll of South Bend, Sally Rowley (Gregg) of Venice, FL; Thomas Voll of Elbe, Washington and 24 great nieces and nephews.

Visitation will be from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m., with a rosary at 7:30 p.m., on Friday, December 3, at the Palmer Funeral Home-Hickey Chapel, 17131 Cleveland Road, South Bend. A mass of Christian burial will be celebrated on Saturday, December 4, 2010, at 11 a.m. at St. Patrick's Catholic Church, 309 S. Taylor, South Bend. Memorial contributions may be made to the Christ Child Society, P.O. Box 1286, South Bend, Indiana 46624; or to the Center for Hospice and Palliative Care, Inc., 111 Sunnybrook Court, South Bend, IN 46637.
