EMERENCIA  A. (MODOS) RAKOW

March 21, 1925 - March 27, 2011
ELKHART - Emerencia A. Rakow, 86, died on Sunday, March 27, 2011, at the South Bend Hospice House after a recent decline in her health. Em was born on March 21, 1925, in Throop, PA, as the daughter of John and Catherine (Gulyas) Modos. The family relocated to South Bend when she was young.

She was a graduate of Washington High School.

On December 28, 1946, she married Henry "Hank" F. Rakow in South Bend. They resided in Elkhart for most of their married life. He preceded her in death on January 21, 1983.

Em was a faithful parishioner of St. Thomas the Apostle Church in Elkhart, IN. She was a member of the Rosary Society and Choir. She was known as "Sergeant Em" to the funeral luncheon committee and soup kitchen crew. She loved spending time with family and friends. She enjoyed playing cards, watching her beloved Cubs and Notre Dame sporting events. She lived a grace-centered life of service and care for others. Her notorious sense of humor was prized by all who knew her.

Em is survived by her son, Mark Rakow of Enterprise, AL; daughter, Lisa (Jean Hohn) Rakow of Loveland, CO; and daughter-in-law, Linda Rakow of Granger; four grandchildren, Derek (Jen) Rakow of Greenwood, IN, Stacy (Aaron) McMann of Bristol, IN, Richard Rakow and Jessica Rakow of Enterprise, AL; four great-grandchildren, Christopher and Cooper Rakow, Bryce and Kylie McMann.

She was preceded in death by her parents, John and Catherine; her husband, Hank; her son, Rex; and her five siblings, Grace T'Kindt, Katherine Smith, Margaret Shearer, John Modos and Emery Modos.

Visitation will be on Thursday, March 31st, from 3 to 7 p.m., with a prayer service at 6:30 p.m. in Hahn Funeral Home, 505 W. 8th Street, Mishawaka. An additional hour of visitation will be held at 9:30 a.m. on Friday, April 1st, at St. Thomas the Apostle Church in Elkhart preceding a Mass of Christian Burial at 10:30 a.m. Burial will follow at Chapel Hill Memorial Gardens, Osceola. In lieu of flowers, the family asks for memorial contributions to either the Center for Hospice, 111 Sunnybrook Court, South Bend, IN 46637; or to St. Thomas the Apostle Church, 1405 North Main Street, Elkhart, IN 46514.
