WALTER J. MALEC

Walter J. Malec Sept. 5, 1926 - Nov. 28, 2014 LAPORTE - Walter J. Malec, 88, of LaPorte, Indiana, passed away on November 28, 2014, at Hospice Franciscan Communities, Michigan City, Indiana. Mr. Malec was born September 5, 1926, in South Bend, Indiana, to Joseph and Bernice (Kuczmaszewska) Malec. On January 22, 1949, in LaPorte, he married Emily A. Schroff, who preceded him on November 8, 2005. He was also preceded by his parents, a son, Daniel J., two brothers, John and William (Ann), and one sister, Mary Ann (Richard) Marciniak.

He is survived by his son, Stephen (Pamela) Malec, South Bend, Indiana, and daughter, Annette Gilbert, Aurora, Colorado; daughter-in-law Catherine Malec of LaPorte, Indiana; four grandchildren, Andrew (Emily), Irvine, California, Anthony, Denver, Colorado, Natalie, La Porte, Indiana, and Kelley, Mishawaka, Indiana; and several nieces and nephews.

Along with his family, he moved to LaPorte on December 20, 1966.

Mr. Malec attended St. Adalbert and Washington High School in South Bend; he worked at Studebaker Corporation until they ceased operations in 1963. He then worked at Tucker Freight Lines, Michigan City, Indiana, where he retired. He was a member of U.A.W. #5 and Teamsters Local #298. He was a Sergeant in the Army. A World War II veteran, he proudly served in the Pacific Theater of Operations. He was a lifetime member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 1130. In his younger years he enjoyed bowling, gardening, and playing euchre with his family and friends. He was a die-hard Cubs fan and an avid Notre Dame football fan since his early boyhood days. He was a member of St. Anthony of Padua Catholic Church, Fish Lake, Indiana.

Visitation will be from 3-7 pm Monday, December 1, 2014, at Essling Funeral Home, with a Rosary Service at 5 pm, with Rev. Michael Heimer officiating. Burial will follow at St Joseph Catholic Cemetery, LaPorte, with military honors. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 11:30 am Tuesday at St. Anthony of Padua Church, 7732 E State Road 4, Walkerton, Indiana, where service will begin at 10 a.m. in the Essling Funeral Home. Memorial contributions may be made to St. Anthony of Padua Church, 7732 E. St. Rd 4, Walkerton, Indiana 46574.
