MICHIGAN CITY - Clementene "Clemie" Kowalski, 94, of Michigan City, passed away on Monday, February 20, 2012 at 6:35 p.m. at her home in Michigan City with her loving family by her side.

Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Saturday at 10:00 a.m. at Saint Stanislaus Kostka Church with Rev. Walter Ciesla officiating. Burial will follow in Saint Stanislaus Cemetery. Viewing will be held on Friday from 4:00 - 8:00 p.m. and on Saturday from 8:30 - 9:30 a.m. at the Root Funeral Home. Saint Stanislaus Rosary Sodality will have a Rosary on Friday at 4:30 p.m. followed by a Women of the Moose Memorial Service at 6:00 p.m., both at the Root Funeral Home.

She was born January 1, 1919 in South Bend, IN to the late George and Victoria Niemier. On August 31, 1940 she married Stanley Kowalski at St. Casimer's Church in South Bend. Clemie and Stanley were married 48 years before his death on October 6, 1988. Stan was the love of her life and she often talked about him throughout her life to her children and grandchildren.

Surviving are four children: Marci (Michael) Kastner of St. Joseph, MI, Elaine Niegos of La Porte, IN, Christine (Larry) Beaver of La Porte, IN and Jim (Susan) Kowalski of Chesterton, IN; fourteen grandchildren: David (Kim) Kastner, Dennis (Tracy) Kastner, Kenneth (Nikki) Kastner, Cindy (Eric) Belz, Susan (Michael) Wilkins, Ronald (Jill) Niegos, Kristi (Lee) Bootz, Tim (Kyra) Niegos, Jennifer (Jeffery) Remijas, Lainie (Norman Lehman) Beaver, Jaimie (Tony) Pierce, Aaron Kowalski, Jessica Kowalski and Brian Kowalski; eighteen great-grandchildren: Andrew, Travis, Rebecca, Kevin and Katelyn Kastner, Mackenzie, Sierra, Kaleigh, and Taylor Belz, Christopher and Shannon Wilkins, Devon and Jordan Niegos, Syndee Spears, Jeffery Remijas Jr., Duston and Tyler Noveroske, and Emily (Kevin) Pattengale; and one great-great-granddaughter: Jayden Niegos.

Preceding her in death is a son-in-law, Richard Niegos; great-great-grandson, Levi Pattengale; three brothers: John, Casimir and Rev. Bernard Niemier CSC; and five sisters: Mary Marcinkowski, Margaret Niespodziany, Regina Makielski, Veronica Szumski and Sophie Zyto. Clemie was the retired bookkeeper for Kowalski's Auto Salvage in Michigan City for 30 years.

She grew up in South Bend and attended St. Casimir Grade School and Washington High School.

For a time she worked at Bendix Corp in South Bend. Memorials may be made to the Saint Stanislaus Renaissance Building Fund.
