EUGENE T. KARNAFEL
April 28, 1933 - March 16, 2009
SOUTH BEND - Eugene T. Karnafel, M.D., 75, passed away at 2:05 a.m. Monday, March 16, 2009, in Memorial Hospital. Eugene was born on April 28, 1933, in South Bend, to Walter and Helen (Golba) Karnafel. On June 30, 1956, in South Bend, he married Mary Ann (Stepniewski). She survives in South Bend along with his mother, Helen Hesler of Naperville, IL; children, Therese (Wayne) Green of Houston, TX, Paula (Johan) Diderik of Apeldoorn, The Netherlands, E. Mitchell (Laura) Karnafel of Logansport, Stephanie (Arie) Van Dijk of South Bend, Keith (Marsha) Karnafel of Indianapolis and Rachel Karnafel of Granger; grandchildren, Christian Diderik, Heath, Alex, Chase, Matthew, Megan and Michael Karnafel, Sarah, Valerie, Samara, Arie, Mitchell and Grace Van Dijk; step-granddaughters, Brooke (Nathan) Santamaria, Tifany and Casey; several step-great-grandchildren; a sister, Geraldine (Charles) Schlabach of Naperville, IL; many nieces and nephews.
Eugene graduated from Washington High School in 1950, Kalamazoo College in 1954 and Indiana University School of Medicine in 1958.
"Gene" or "Doc" loved learning and continued to study medicine and history, especially World War II and the Bible. As a physician Dr. Karnafel worked at Madison State Hospital (1960-1966) and Logansport State Hospital (1966-1990).
Visitation was from 1 to 3 p.m. on Friday, March 20th, in ST. JOSEPH FUNERAL HOME, 824 S. Mayflower Road. A funeral service began at 3 p.m. Friday in the funeral home. Memorial contributions may be made to the donor's choice. For those who were unable to attend the funeral service, condolences may be sent to the family at www.sjfh.net.
