ALBERTA (BINION) HAWKINS
April 12, 1948 - June 5, 2012
SOUTH BEND - Alberta Hawkins, age 64, loving mother, grandmother and sister, peacefully departed this life on Tuesday morning, June 5, 2012 at her home. Alberta was born to the union of George and Corrine (Martin) Binion on April 12, 1948 in Greenwood, Mississippi. Affectionately known by all who loved her as "Bae, Bae", she was the sixth of eight children and she moved to South Bend, Indiana as a child in 1957.
She attended Harrison Elementary and Washington High School.
Alberta later joined in holy matrimony to Jake Hawkins, who preceded her in death in 1988. She retired from Zikers Cleaners after 14 years of service as a press operator and was a foster mother to 22 children throughout the years.
Alberta also was preceded in death by her parents, George & Corrine Binion; two sons, John Binion & Vernon Williams; two sisters, Corrine Alford & Minnie Lee Brandy; and a special niece, Ora Lee "Doll Baby" Binion.
Alberta leaves to cherish her memory five sons, Verdell (Juanita) Williams, Lorenzo Williams, Adonis Hawkins, Andre Wilson and Bobby Blackmon all of South Bend; five daughters, Tessa (Shawn) Watts of Bloomington, IN, Ruth Ann Binion, Margaret Binion, Wendy (John) Binion and Timika Jackson all of South Bend; four stepchildren, Sandy Hawkins of Indianapolis, Indiana, Adena, Angela and Ronnie Hawkins both of South Bend; 15 grandchildren; four great grandchildren; two brothers, Roosevelt Binion and George Binion both of Cleveland, Ohio; three sisters, Elizabeth Neal, Nettie (Billy) Belton and Atta Mae (John D) Ulmer; special lifelong friends, Velma Jean Traylor & Johnnie H. Williams all of South Bend; along with a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and close friends who will all miss her.
"If tears were steps and memories were a lane, I'd walk right up to Heaven & bring you home..................."
Funeral services will be held at 12:00 p.m. on Monday, June 11, 2012 at Alford's Mortuary with visitation occurring one hour prior to services.
